Transmission vent

    I am trying to lift my transmission breather. Have removed the cap and was wondering what kind of union did you guys use? Nipple has no threads, OD 10 mm.

    I was wondering the same thing. @Speedytech7 said it was a press in. I tried with a slide hammer and a couple of other improvised methods and all failed. So, I just pulled the top of the breather, attached some hose and ran it up into the engine bay.

    If you're river crossing that deep, you will have other problem(s). Keep in mind, you're shifter is not 100% water tight as well, which is right next to the vent. Defeat the purpose to reroute the breather in this case.

    What "Why"? Water ingress.

    Lacking a thread, I agree with the press in. But what component did you press, and what hose?

    Yeah, this is not for deep fording and sustained submersion, more like preventing splashing water from entering.

    I still need help figuring out what fitment to use.

    Grab some leftover fuel line or trans cooler line and use that to extend it out. What I meant by hose. As for pressing it in, I have no idea. I ordered a replacement breather for it from toyota and just ended up tossing it in the parts box when I couldn't remove it. Extended the breather anyway. You can pop the top of that thing back on with its little spring or just run some line.

    The water crossing thing I'm not even going to comment on. To me, its making sure I've done what I can to use something other than that factory breather. I had the rear axle one get stuck/blocked on me and it cost me in repairing that axle seal. I'm not bothering with those factory breathers any longer. Front diff, transmission and rear axle have all been run to the engine bay.

    @Speedytech7 might be able to comment further on how to press in a new one if thats what you want to do. :thumbsup:

    The 4000 acres I hunt here in MS has a lot of deep mud/high water. It is just adjacent to the Big Black River, a tributary to the Mississippi River, so you can easily lose your truck when it floods. And nowadays, unlike when I started hunting this area back in the '70s, it routinely floods every year. I have also done rescue/recovery in my '97 Taco after Hurricanes Katrina/Ike/Harvey and several tornadoes. All (4) vents on my '97 Taco mud machine hunting truck had to be raised to help keep water out. If you try to follow me around with the OEM vents on your Taco tranny and Tcase, you better have a couple jugs of gear lube handy because you will be changing it quite often. My hunting buddy can attest to that. The nipple on the OEM vent is short so I had doubts that a hose clamp installation would be durable for my uses. I removed the OEM vents completely; they are just pressed in. You can thread the holes if you like, but I simply used nylon 90 degree vent fittings rotary filed down to press-fit in. The fittings were sealed with Ultra Black as were the tranny & Tcase shifter boots top and bottom. Water damage to the running gear has been my nemesis down here on the Gulf Coast.

    Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    Pull the shifter plate off weld or tap threads for what ever type of fitting you want to use.

    Attach what every type of hose you desire a threaded connection or just a simple barbed fitting and a clamp.

    That's exactly what I ended up doing. I 3D printed a clip on adaptor with a 90 degree turn and a barb for 3/8" ID hose.

    I designed it to snap on the little nipple of the breather. Also added shoulders for 5/8" hose clamps:

    Then printed three of them (thinking one will break during install) sideways, so the layers would not separate the wrong way. Material: Nylon carbon fiber.

    They came out great and with a good push snapped onto the nipple, still rotating freely.
