I know I know I know another question/ post about the Tacoma transmission . I know we all complain about the shutter, gear hunting ect, but has anyone actually have a trans go out? I just rolled 100k and I noticed the shutter is getting a little worse and was wondering if it's actually on its way out or not. or how often if ever, do they fail?

Not on Tacoma, but on the FWD Toyotas, the shudder eventually grenades the transmission, but he shudder is so bad the dash shakes, and the engine actually dials timing back because it thinks its knocking.

Is it bad? Consistent? I've yet to experience a bad shudder in a Tacoma.

It doesn't shake the dash, but I can feel it in the petal, It HATES stop and go driving seems like its always between the wrong gears.

Drain and refill the fluid. Will do wonders for the shutter.

The biggest “shudder” (not shutter) I have is when switching from Park to Drive. The whole car shakes and then once it’s in gear life is good. 1,700 miles on it.

I’m assuming this is normal across the Tacomas.

Change the fluid as others have said
Do a drop pan and change the screen and gasket
Then drive and and do two more drain and refill leaving the pan on . After the first one alone it should be better

Mine is 2023 bought beginning of June 800 miles. Have noticed twice a shudder and sort of clunk when going from park to reverse in my garage after it has sat for a day or so. The vsc message both times came on dash and then disappeared and all seemed good. Trying to figure out if this is normal as well.

Might have to drive a few new ones and see if they’re all the same, that’s my plan once I have some time. If you take it to the dealer they’ll slap you with the “within normal parameters” and send you home.

I don't think failures are common at all. At least, doing a couple searches for variations of "transmission failure" didn't yield more than a handful of results, and that's coming up on 8 years of the 3rd gens being out. Typically people come here to try and solve some problem with their vehicle, so you would think they'd be common threads if it was an issue where they needed an actual replacement due to damage, but personally I haven't seen many.

Toyota's definitely have their quirks/issues, but they seem to always be stout in terms of engine/transmission durability. It's why I bought one, and that's what I tell people when they inevitably break something expensive like a transmission under 100k miles on their (insert any vehicle brand here, Toyota included occasionally). Obviously Toyota's can and do fail all the time overall, but they've been consistently, for several decades at this point, at the top end in terms of overall reliability.

I'd say that's been the case with the 3rd gens as well. Not perfect or without issue by any means, but low catastrophic failure rates. Personally, that's all I want in a vehicle is a low percentage chance of being stranded on the interstate somewhere going on vacation with a broken truck and an expensive repair bill.

Which I'm sure means I'm destined to grenade my Tacoma in some horrible fashion, I'll come back and update :anonymous:.

Last time I was at the dealer they had two 2017's that needed transmissions. On both torque converters took out the transmission (messed up the input shaft). Ironically my truck was in for the shudder. Traded it in a couple months later.

Do all the Toyota "r" transmissions have the same bolt pattern to mate to the engine? Looking to adapt a r155 to a TDI
