Just wanted to get someone experience here with my 2005 4runner since it shares the same drive train. I got a bad leak coming from the bellhousing plastic cover.

I'm assuming the tranny will need to be dropped. If anyone have some tips please share. Thanks

I was thinking of that too but wanted to pull the transmission to save some money on labor cost. I did have AAMCO do my '85 pickup and it was top notched.

If it's leaking from the bottom of the bell housing, more than likely, it's the input shaft seal.

I sure hope it's just that. Short story, the girls was having fun on the sand dunes and one of them bogged down and that's when it started leaking.

Are you sure it is transmission leaking and not the rear main seal.

Smell it. If it is gear oil it will stink.

It's definitely red and transmission is not even engaging. Slipping like it's on skate. I did check and add fluid and it worked until it's low on fluid.

Roger. It sounds like you're all over it. I had to ask as I have seen people get confused before....

    Best of luck!

Why would gear oil be leaking out the rear main seal?
Gear oil is in your differentials.
Engine oil leaks out the rear main.

he was stating its possible its a rear main seal leak, smell it and determine if its ATF or regular oil and that will let you know what side its leaking from.

I never said that it could be gear oil from a rear main seal.

In his original post I thought he had a manual transmission that takes gear oil... as he didn't say one way or the other in post # 1.

Considering that it could be the transmission input shaft seal leaking gear oil OR a rear main seal leaking motor oil. Later he mentioned that it was an automatic transmission.

    Better?

    You get it! :)

    And .... don't be obtuse.

    ob·tuse

.annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand.

    OK, last chance.

    1. I assumed he had a manual shift transmission, as this was not disclosed in the OP.
    2. Lots of manual transmissions use gear oil.
    3. The OP was stating that it was the transmission leaking.
    4. I pointed out that it could be the rear main seal leaking.
    5. In a new sentence i suggested a way to tell the difference between gear oil and motor oil.

I think you need a Snickers Bar. Are you always this slow?

Keep calm guys! I understand what everyone is asking and saying....lol

I haven't got around working on the 4runner yet. The plan is dropping the transmission myself to save some money. From there I'll determine if I need a specialist or not.

Just an update. Transmission is dropped and lots of beach sand got in there. Torque converter is burnt a bit. Should I just swap for a new torque converter and new seal? All should be good from there since the tranny is sealed? Guess sand can get into that fly wheel under cover. First for me.

Holy, talk about sand in places it just don't belong.

Have you pulled the torque convertor out of the transmission, and checked for any sand getting past the seal? If no sign of sand internally, it sounds like you are on the right track.

Hate to say it but your going to need a transmission. When the vehicle was stuck and they tried to get it out they overheated the transmission. The excessive heat from the torque converter cooks the front seal out and it starts to leak. When they get that hot they are usually done. Sorry.
