Hello, I am trying to top of my 2016 tacoma transmission fluid but have hard time reaching the fill Nut. Has any one filled fluid thru the level check using a tube?
    Thanks.

The atf kit uses a fill tube and i think a pump. You should be able to get a filler kit for Atf fluid at an autoparts store...

Playing devils advocate here. Make sure you actually need fluid, did you check and it shows low?

I am in the process too to check my tranny level..i had nothing come out of the overfill tube..and took me awhile to even find the fill nut.. so if it can be done through the overfill it would be great.. one thing I am curious of is. Does not removing the fill nut create a lock not allowing the fluid to come out . Or is mine just low too... I will probably answer my own question soon.. waiting for the transmission temp to come down..but if I don't have to fight with that fill nut .i won't. , I have a fill pump with a hose that could fill through the overfill tube..

good point on needing both nuts out to possibly create pressure
for the fluid to flow properly as opposed to having just the over-flow
    bolt out.

Just completed mine, almost a full litre low, so can't be sure if the fill bolt holds back the flow through the overfill or not.. cause mine was so low.. and the damn fill bolt is a PITA to get to.. and I do believe that heat shield is engineered like that to discourage people to service it themselves... blood has been spilt..lol, damn thing is sharp, I did read a warning about that but didn't believe it, paid the price.. good luck, and dont forget to check your diff too same size bolt and very easy to check my was low also.. more then half a litre... ?? So relieved for this site..

I can barely fit my hand between it and the tranny to get my figures on the bolt to get it off once it was too loose for the ratch .. best thing is to wear some gloves.. cheers

Have you ever checked your trans fluid? Because 2nd gens had the same issue. FWIW I think it's overblown, a 1/2 quart shouldn't mean much but some have reported much more.

It is actually not that tight if a fit.. but it is a pain.. the fill plug is up beside that plug.. you can't actually see it. Took me a while to find it..

Dents in roof from poorly loaded canoe. Broken side mirror from blown transfer truck tire. Scuffed up front bumper from thinking I was still in a corolla. Graham cracker embedded upholstery from a crazy kid.
It's pretty tight when the engine is running and you are trying to work quickly. It got me...

The third degree burns on my knuckles from trying to work next to a running truck's catalytic converter were worse than the cuts, in my opinion.

There is a 15/16(24mm) filler plug right near the green wire plug on the body of the transmission, you can not really see it have to feel for it and put the ratch onto it.. a long handle ratch works best, it is kind of a PITA..

Get a fluid pump and a couple feet of hose to extend it. Be sure to break the bolts free before starting the procedure and you should be good. Once you're in the temp range you actually have quite a bit of time to get it done.

I used the Harbor freight pump. Remove the fill plug. The pump will screw onto the Toyota transmission fluid bottle. The plastic tube that goes inside the bottle will need to be trimmed some so the pump will screw all the way down. I used mine without screwing the cap all the way down. The transmission fill port has a 24MM bolt that has WS embossed on the head of the bolt.
The end of the hose from the pump to the transmission has a clip that will hold it in place on the transmission fill port while the truck is running so it won't fall out on you or the hot exhaust system. Get this all ready before your dealing with a running truck and while everything is cold. Just so your not fighting a hot heat shield or a smoking hot catalytic converter. I used a small box lined with aluminium foil as my catch basin, a foil turkey pan would work better. Now start your truck and get it in check mode and follow the proper check procedure don't forget to pin open the transmission cooler switch. a small paper clip works well to pin back the valve after you push it in. I bought 2 bottles of fluid from Toyota and used one. When your done shut off the truck and let the exhaust system cool before undoing your fluid pump and plugging the transmission fill port and removing the paperclip.
