Transmission cooler inlet and outlet

    I’m in the middle of installing a Hayden oil cooler (you can see mounting brackets on the left where it will go) after the stock cooler. However, outlet barb (left barb in the pic) on the stock cooler comes out at a weird angle and I’m having a hard time routing a line to the left (where the new cooler goes) without some tight bends. Since both barbs are on the bottom, can I change the flow direction in the stock cooler? In other words, route the inlet tube to the left barb, and have the right barb go to the new cooler? TIA

    This is a good idea - the angled outlet from under the factory cooler is a more natural flow path when configuring the new piping. If there are no flow controls in the factory cooler (free in either direction) there isn't any down side to this.

    That’s exactly what I’m wondering, if there is any directional flow control in the factory cooler

    The stock cooler doesn't have a check valve or anything. If your Hayden unit is substantially larger, I would delete the OEM - fewer connections means fewer leak points. I replaced my OEM with a Hayden 696 and have run it hard in some very hot weather with acceptable, and very stable, trans temps.

    I thought this was a peculiar oem setup as well, I’d think it would trap air inside. I was originally going to delete the oem, but hd second thoughts when towing recently got temps up to 235F. Very briefly. Guess I can go without oem first and figure out how to add it back in later if needed. I have the Hayden 698 which is a little bit smaller than the 679

    any towing? I pull a small travel trailer (3000 lb empty) so would rather have more cooling than needed

    I know some of the Hayden coolers have an internal by-pass.
    This allows the fluid to warm up faster. Once it gets "warm" the by-pass opens and colling begins.
    I can not say for certain what will happen if you hook it up backwards. But the by-pass may not work right.
    You definitely, don't want to "delete" the cooler hooking it up backwards.

    Naw, no air is going to get trapped. The transmission is vented, so any bubbles float up and dissipate. I say leave the oem cooler, especially if you’ll be towing. The hose inlets/outlets are long enough you can put two mini hose clamps at each end.

    The photo the OP included is exactly like my '14 - the factory aux cooler has both ports on the bottom. On the Hayden 670 series (mine is a 677) the instructions say their in/out ports are interchangeable. They also say that fluid will short circuit directly from port to port until the temp rises. The OEM trans cooling chamber in the engine radiator exits from the top port and immediately drops down to roughly the same elevation as the two bottom ports in the little aux cooler. I don't think Toyota engineers were thinking that bubbles may be trapped in these components when pressurized- if so, the arrangement might be designed differently.

    Ended up taking out the OEM cooler, for now. I was able to blow fluid both ways when I got it out so doesn’t appear to have any kind flow directionality. Have a short camping trip this weekend so will see how the temps are while towing. Thanks all! And a photo for completeness

    I would've followed the orientation of the rest of the "cooler's already installed, radiator and A/C. As in hot inlet on passenger side. Not as you installed it, hot on top.

    hot is on the bottom, not top. Thought being it will help push air out as the bottom fills up.

    I meant the orientation of the cooler itself, as in both ports on top, hot input to passenger's side.
    And I think the hot is the top hose.
    Hot from transmission to top driver's side radiator nipple, out bottom radiator nipple to hose to top pipe to hose to cooler. "Cooled" from cooler to hose to bottom pipe to hose to pipe under radiator to hose to pipe to transmission.

    I just double checked and flow is as below. The instructions that came with the hayden cooler said it could be mounted horizontally or vertically.

    Your cooler is mounted the way I did my Long Tru-Cool LPD 4454 four years ago. Since then I have logged thousands of miles through many states includingi AZ, NM, UT, CO and my home state of TX. Zero issues. You'll be fine.
