So I recently had some transmission issues where some of the solenoids were not functioning. After some research I found out it’s probably the connector to the transmission wiring harness, and this makes sense cause I’ve been driving through water a good amount lately. Checked it, full of corrosion, soaked it in some coke, blasted it out with electrical cleaner, added some dielectric grease, problem solved. But I would like to replace the wiring harness and the connector since I’m sure the corrosion is bad enough it’ll probably just come back. I’ve found the parts but my problem is, how can I access the wire to the plug in a way that I can cut it and solder in a new plug? Coming in from the bottom like I did in this picture is way too tight. Is it possible to get at this through the center console somehow?

many insight would be great. I’ve been having a hell of a time finding info on this fix.

    thanks y’all!

Damn, I have no idea. Did you check all the wire seals on the back side of each connector were still seated and intact? If you can make sure no more water gets in, you might be ok leaving it as is with a good layer of dielectric.

yea that may be the case, but it would just give me peace of mind the replace it now. But if I need to drop the transmission to do it, forget about it!

You’ll have to drop the trans or cut a hole in the tunnel if wanting to work from the top

Hmm that is part of the main harness... The easiest way would probably be lowering the tranny (if you don't want to just remove the tranny from the motor) from the cross member, letting the tranny sag a little using a jack, and maybe you will get more space to work in there, but it will be tight regardless.

So when you did them how did you go about getting enough space to solder those wires? Did you have to drop the tranny?

    Nope
Get the harness loose enough so you can comfortably work under the truck.
Once the harness is disconnected from the transmission , you will have some room to cut and solder.

Yes i guess thats what I don't know how to go, where does the other side of the wire go? how much slack can I create? Are there any retainers keeping that wire in place that I can take off to give me more space? I don't want to just pull on it till I have enough wire to work with...

The other side of the wiring goes to the computer in your truck .
Yes , there are retainers holding that external wiring harness from touching the exhaust and rotating parts .
Nobody at Tacoma World has done a write up with pictures for this problem
With this being said , the best info I can give you is here

If memory serves me correctly , the wires on the aftermarket Rostra external wiring harness are all 1 colour .
Its up to you to make the wires fit in the proper location . A tacoma wiring harness can be found second hand with the correct colors but you gonna pay a pretty penny .

Order up both the internal harness and the external harness from Rostra .
Grab a pan gasket and a fresh transmission filter from the dealer plus enough WS fluid for a pan drop .

Once the internal harness is removed , carefully remove the external harness from the transmission casing .
Then begin cutting and soldering .
If the job sounds too big , its about $1500 bucks in a transmission shop to have this done . It takes time and a shop has to gaurantee their work .
If you are up to the challenge at home , I am sure we can help
