As the title says, one oil I’ve read about is the redline mt-lv as an alternative. Has anyone used it? Plus, if I buy one quart, is the Toyota fluid compatible with the redline / ravenol to where you could top up with the old fluid? Don’t want to buy two quarts if I don’t have to.

    Thanks in advance.

Used it in my vehicle plus other redline products for manual trans, differentials, etc. ... all have worked great.

If your mileage is 30k+, would consider doing a change and will need 1.1 qt or 1 liter.

I used Redline MTL. It’s all compatible.

GL4 spec oil is very important . The brass inside the transfer case can get pitted over time with GL-5 stuff. Now I do see Amsoil severe gear is supposed to be ok in GL4 applications even though it’s GL 5 rated .With all that I went with the Ravenol stuff . Which so far has been totally fine. But it was interesting to see that GL -4 notation on the Amsoil stuff , which makes me think would it actually be ok as a replacement?

It's never happened though and no can prove it.

Most dealers run GL5 and you wont find any failures of transfer cases except the odd actuator.

I only push for GL4 on manual gear boxes, but I think the fear of GL5 in a transfer case is unfounded. It's not ideal, but not required.

The Redline stuff will be fine, so would Ravenol, so would Toyota….and unless you live in ridiculously cold Canada, 75W-90 GL4 or 5 would be fine as well. I personally have 80W-90 GL4 conventional in mine and it shifts the smoothest it ever has….in Texas. I got a bunch of clunky shifts on the OEM stuff. Not always or even most of the time, but a lot of the time.

Based on advice of others here, I used it when I changed my TC this summer at ~60K. Used Amsoil Extreme Gear Lube for the differentials. No idea about compatibility though.

Yep I use it in my Tacoma and 5th gen 4Runner, after reading about it here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/‘16-newer-transfer-cases.636057/

The Tacoma transfer case developed a leak at the rear flange seal a year after I changed the oil. No idea if it's related to the Redline oil. Note that seal isn't submerged in oil while the truck is sitting stationary.

All Redline here, in all of my Toyota trucks since a 2009 Gen 2, a Gen 3 Tacoma, Gen 5 4Runner (2) a Highlander. I use the MT-LV in the transfer cases and the 75W-85 in the differentials. No issues and I think they smooth out the transfer case.

Thanks for the responses. Ordered the redline since it’s available on Amazon and free shipping

Redline is my go to for transfer case and diffs. Been running it for a couple years. Np! Highly recommended.

As someone else stated one can of the OEM fluid is enough. That’s the safe and easy choice, the additive package of the ravenol isn’t even close to similar to the Toyota fluid, why risk it for a few bucks is my opinion.

Do you have a source for this information? I have not found anything in my research to suspect it isn't equivalent.

I used something from Amsoil under the Transfer Case section
    Probably a normal weight

    https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-...oyota/tacoma/4-0l-6-cyl-engine-code-1gr-fe-z/

    70-75w sounds low.
    AFAIK 75w80, 75w90, 80w90
    are more common specs.

Higher hot weight is said to offer more protection under hard use. At the cost of some MPG loss. Only thing I’ve done that to is putting BG syn 75w140 in stock rear diff.

edit: maybe not. It appears certain Toyota tcase oil is labeled as straight 75w

looks like only 1 amsoil oil is both thinner, falls under tcase compatible, and does not contain LSD additives

I used redline 75w my first change but due to cost I just used syncromesh the next time. Close to the viscosity of 75w but alot easier to find.

it's presently -41 here with no wind chill and just for fun after gaining feeling to my hands and I started to move the truck I shifted through the transfer case and everything worked as well as the 75w.

Gl4 is the better option for the transfer case if you insist on 75w-90 but not compulsory. The syncro in there doesn't have a very hard job to do if you follow the shifting instructions or ideally are coasting in straight line.

Either way I doubt it'll ever wear out unless you like to play with the 4wd dial around corners, while the traction control light is flashing or you're just plain spinning the tires

Since we are on the subject - sort of...

I got this for the Diffs... only after did i notice the note about the limited slip friction modifier...
    Is this ok to use?
Does anyone have any insight on this?
    TIA
