    Trying to diagnose. Pretty sure the trans pump failed without taking it out of the truck. I’m going to have to pull transmission but wondering what y’all think? Going to try tackling this myself.

    Have you checked the fluid? It sounds like it could be sucking air and cavitating.

    Well if the fluid level is good and the filter is installed properly it definitely sounds like an internal problem.
    Does it still drive?

    @gearcruncher your thoughts?

    Yea it still drives a cools/ shifts fine. It started after I gone wheeling on a hard trail. Noise did that is. Drove 8 hours home. Trans did get up to 240* and pulled over let cool. Then rest of way home it never got above 175*. So don’t know what to think shifts still like nothing wrong. Haven’t driven truck since I got home Sunday. Changed fluid tonight and nothing changed. I’m almost positive it’s a pump issue.

    I mean it could be an internal bearing too but I'm not a transmission guy so I couldn't tell you what to look for, either way seems like the transmission is gona need to come apart.
    Was there metal in the pan when you changed the fluid?

    Yea he's not as active on here as he used to be but he still usually checks in once a week or so.

    I turned the crank shaft by hand and one side moves east and then comes around to a spot that’s a lot harder to turn. Could be a gear meshing issue but the noise is coming right at the torque converter/bell housing area.

    I wouldn't think so, it's a gerotor pump.
    As much noise as it's making I would have expected there to be metal in the pan, in the past when I've heard pumps sound like that they wouldn't hardly make enough pressure to make the transmission move and the pan is usually full of metal but I've never dealt with any Toyota transmissions.

    Definitely a strange one, I wish I could be more help but transmissions are not my strong point.

    Have you removed the inspection plate to have a look at the torque converter and flex plate? Doubt it will result in anything, but worth a shot.

    All of a sudden? Not always? Hard wheeling?

    Any loose or cracked lines! Pumps cavitation can make noise. Basically water hammerig quickly

    Yes right after a hard trail wheeling on. Double locked/ inclined lol. Definitely probably did it. But it still shifts and cools? Except for that one instance I mention above.

    From what you said, and after hearing the noise, I'd suspect something with the flex plate. Cracked or distorted and rubbing on something in the bell housing. (I used to fix trans for a living)

    Yea it’s tougher to turn from crankshaft on one side only. Maybe it will be a simple flex plate swap out? Hope that’s the case lol. But it’s definitely coming from that area no question in my mind

    Doubt it's the converter, it moves, shifts. Flex plate, either way it has to come out.
