So I want to add a trailer hitch to my 2022 Tacoma SR but don’t want to do the tail light connection I keep seeing on videos. I looked underneath where the false connection cover is and saw a pig tail connection where the taillight wiring/connection is and was wondering if that’s for the hitch wiring connection. Can anyone help me out?

No, trailer hitch wiring is hard-wired right into the truck harness and if the truck doesn’t have a hitch, it doesn’t get that wiring. What you are referring to is probably the unused blind spot monitor hookup, all trucks get that even if they don’t have BSM.

But it looks like it’s tied in or coming from the rear light wiring harness. Can’t imagine it’s a sensor pigtail.

All trucks have a pigtail that mounts to a little bracket back there for BSM and sonar. If equipped, the BSM and sonar sensors have a harness in the bumper that will plug into that pigtail. Right next to the BSM pigtail that may or may not be used, is a rear lighting pigtail. That one is always used, obviously.

The tow harness is not like the other two. Trucks have different harnesses from the cab to the rear depending on if they’re a tow package truck or not. Non-tow package trucks don’t have any wiring provisions for towing. On a truck that does have the tow package, there is no pigtail along the way. The wiring from the cab goes all the way back there and terminates to a plug that actually plugs into the back of the 7/4 tow connector itself. If the truck isn’t equipped for towing, then none of the wiring that goes to that plug for the 7/4 is there at all.

Thank you for the information. Any thoughts on the best way to wire up for trailer wiring?

It's not related to trailer lights or the 7/4 housing

Only have 2 choices: one of the aftermarket harnesses (most are just the 4pin and won't use the oem 7/4 housing in the back bumper, so you'll have it dangling there in the back, which looks like ass) or trying your luck with building your own 7pin round end connector and making it work with the driver's door sill plug-in, which your truck may or may not have. Which is 50% more work for a result that may not work.
