Recently purchased a new 6.5x10 and would like to stain the deck. Not sure what product to use or if regular ol wood deck stain and sealant would hold up to the use a trailer will get. Any ideas guys? Any textured finishes out there somebody has used with good results?

New trailer. Just got it yesterday. Trying to finish the deck before I use it for anything

If you want the most perfect deck, consider using composite lumber. Never needs stained or sealed or dries out and shrinks.

You will never be happy with a trailer deck that lives outside its whole life. You can only put off the eventual deck replacement.

Yeah I realize it won’t last for ever. Just trying to make it look nice. Paid good money for a nice quality trailer and want it to stay that way. It sits under a carport so it’s not directly exposed to rain.

It appears to be pressure treated already. I'd say wait a few more months then apply any deck stain like Penofin (my preferred stain) or similar. Make sure when you do to spray the underneath too. IMHO

I used Behr DeckOver on my trailer. Has held up well to firewood being thrown/stacked, tractor equipment being drug over it, oil spills, pressure washing, shovelling gravel, all sorts of stuff. Only spots where it has pulled up is where chunks of the wood have been gouged out.

Thompson's water seal is good, but you should just use the store brand and get 5 gallons. Use a cheap, 1 gallon garden sprayer to coat it once a year.

As for adding traction, my opinion is it hides the imperfections and knots in the wood. The wood used is never the highest quality. I want to know where the weak spots are on the deck. I've stepped thru a couple rotted decks over the years.

Judging by the gaps in the lumber, I'd say you are fine to apply a sealent. It's plenty dried out and will soak up the coating fast.

I was thinking this product as well. No personal experience with it but I remember the commercials and seems ideal. When I did my trailer I used rustoleum enamel paint out of a quart can. Has held up well

Wow thanks for all the reply's. Wasn’t expecting to get so many. I was thinking Thompson’s water seal+stain. 2-3 coats on the top and bottom and should be good. If it last 5 years I’d be happy.

Ended up using Thompson water seal. And installed a harbor freight tongue box for my straps. Bolted in my tie downs. Pops said trailer is nice to use now :D

    That turned out nice!

Now treat yourself to some Gorilla Lifts. 2 fingers to lift and lower the gate. No risk of blowing a grape!

Buddy came by and built me a spare tire mount. No completed pics of the studs welded through the plate but you get the idea.

1/2" plate? I usually use 10 gauge. That's not going anywhere!
