So for poo's and giggles this afternoon I went on KBB and checked my 2020 Tacomas trade in value. Truck looks new and has 26,000 miles on it. It is a AG Pro and I used the standard KBB options for getting the value. It came back as an average trade in of $40,500.
A little while later I got to thinking (dangerous I know) wonder how a 2024's trade in value would compare to mine.
So I went back on KBB. I used a 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport with 16,000 miles for comparison. Gotta have the skewp you know! I didn't think a new PRO would be a fair comparison, and maybe a OR would have been a better choice. But it is what it is. Anyways, I loaded the Sport with basically all options, and a good neutral Silver color. Trade in value for it came back at $38,500. Thought that was interesting. Yes it's not apples to apples, but a 4 year older truck vs. a new model with 40% less miles....
EDIT. I just did a 2024 OR Premium the same as the Sport. It came in at $40,100 average trade in.

We buy Tacoma's because they are simple machines that rarely break. Load them down with bullshit gimmicks and a weak ass puffed up engine and surprise surprise, you lose the vast majority of your customers.

Hybrid might bring more since it has a higher initial price and that's the feature the hybrid buyer wants.

Ain't that the truth. Can't be mad that Toyota wants to have fun with this generation of truck, but they included plenty of things I haven't seen people ask for. I can't see why Toyota can't offer both customers what they want, the market can decide what sells.

I have to agree here. A turbo 4 might be ok for a car. But for a truck that may be a different story.

Why don’t you run like for like. A 2020 sport vs a 2024 sport.

Ok so I did. Ran it on a 2020 loaded OR.
This is what it came back as.

The 2020 is still running strong after 4 years right?
The 2024.... who knows if it will even turn over in 4 years.

    Personal thoughts?
The 2024 looks stupid with the silly 'fin' thing overhanging the cab in the back.
Access Cab doesn't have a door right to the jump seats right?... duh...
The 4 Cyl Turbo can't be trifled with and will blow up as soon as you strain it.

Others will say I'm crazy, and I will not disagree with their thoughts...

So, what’s the point? A fully loaded 24 OR with 16k miles books at38-40. Tacomas depreciate slowly, a 3 year old one is 5-6k less. Seems reasonable to me.

I guess the take away I get from the KBB.
Is that it's most likely possible. That I can trade my 2020 3rd gen with 26,000 miles. In even for a 4 year newer loaded 2024 TRD OR or Sport. With less miles and a new warranty.

You've got it backwards. The old 4.0 V6 is a dependable workhorse but dated.

The 3.5 they put in the 3rd gens was a car engine. It had no guts and needed 4600 rpm to get 266 lb ft of torque. That's why everyone complained about the transmission. The transmission isn't the problem. It has to keep changing gears to keep rpm's in the power band.

The 4 cylinder turbo will easily outperform the 3.5 and gets 310 lb ft of torque at only 1700 rpm's. That's what a truck engine needs. Power at low engine speeds.

While the small turbo engine may be new for Toyota others have successfully used them for years. I'm sure Toyota will figure it out.

But you are comparing a pro. KBB doesn’t have that option for the 2024. The highest they go is limited, which books out 47-50k. A pro will book out more. This is like saying I can trade my 3 year old Lexus straight up for a new Camry.

I'm not interested in trading. My truck is paid for and I'll keep it.
But I did ask for a quote on a new loaded 2024 while getting my oil changed back in the summer. Their 1st off for trade in on my truck was more than I paid new for it.

Everyone gets hung up on engine longevity but the majority of us will get rid of our trucks for other reasons.

There are lots of people who can say every vehicle they ever owned is still on the road. They're not driving it but it's still on the road with its original engine.

That’s an accurate description of the third gen, to a T. Full of gimmicks, electronics and a weak ass engine.
