I was rooting around under my dash today and noticed this little black electrical device tapped into my OBD port. Is it some sort of tracking device?

I thought I remember someone commenting before about these when a car is financed, not sure if that's real or not.

It looks suspicious. Run a net search on some of those numbers on the label (can’t see from the pics).

I should add that I’m joking. I’d be curious too, just reminded me of Dale.

It sure looks like a tracking device. It has an FCC ID which means it has some type of radio(s) in it, which could include GPS or cellular.

The way that it is tapped inline with the OBD II port is probably the easiest way to get a 12V constant power source without adding an inline add-a-fuse that is a little less hidden than this. Good find.

Now, if you remove it, is it against the legal paperwork you signed with the bank/dealer when the truck was financed? (I ask this because almost every thread on here asking "WHAT IS THIS TRACKING DEVICE", the truck is financed and the bank is tracking them to protect their owned asset that you're paying off)

It could also be a GPS used to manage vehicles on the dealer lot...

I found one of these on a used car I purchased from a dealer awhile back. I removed it right away. Its a type of GPS tracking device. Some dealers will install them as part of a service plan. It tells the dealer if any maintenance that is due like an oil change. It can also be used as a tracking device to find the vehicle. Some fleet companies will install them to track their vehicles. Its also used by the dealer or company who financed your vehicle. Like if you are delinquent on your payments it provides a GPS location of the vehicle to the repo company.

I’d ask the dealer? I’d also look through your paperwork. It seems to me I’d disconnect it. Whoever is possibly monitoring will see it drop off their system.

    goodluck

I where did you purchase this? New. Used?

Yes, it's a GPS tracking device. I had to add the same module to allow my remote start to work from my cell. It also allows me to see my trucks location on my phone.

It’s a transmitter. Has a fcc number and IMEI registration number.

It’s a tracker. It has the potential to brick a vehicle because they can shut it off if it’s stolen. I shitcanned the one that came in my 4Runner.

If it were my vehicle and if it were 100% paid for, I'd remove it.
