i have a 2017 Tacoma. Just until recently I've had no problems but now I am getting the trac off light and check engine light on.

First off the trac off light only turns on when the truck is parked and when I start driving it goes away. Anyone know the cause? Tried gas cap thing that didn't work.

Second I know the engine light is due to a wire being chewed by a rodent so that's not something I'm to worried about since the dealer said that was the issue.

But anyone know why the trac off light comes on while parked and goes away while once I start driving? It only comes on when the truck is in park?

    Thanks in advance!

Maybe the rat chewed up more than one wire??

Unless you use a good OBDII tool to pull the data it will be hard to know why its coming on.

I think I would be majorly worried about any wire that had been chewed by a rodent. One short anywhere has the potential to fry the whole shebang.

While a check engine light coming on may be from the rat, but what if something really fails and you perceive it to be the rat problem? Now you blow the converters or smoke a transmission. Then you go calling for a warranty repair and in your dealer file you haven't had the check engine repair fixed from the last time you were in the shop. You bet your ignoring repairs and a check engine light that has been on for months will have repercussions. The truck has data loggers that they can check and all your dealer service records are on file. Who do you think they are going to find responsible for the excessive damage? It surly is not going to be them to pick up a 2 to 3 grand repair. The whole check engine stuff is to repair something that may be minor before it becomes major. Your putting yourself in a bad position as an owner.

The dealer said they won't repair it and it has to go through insurance??? That doesn't seem right to me but, they said they don't cover rodents eating wires.

Meaning they won't cover it under warranty, and are suggesting you use your comprehensive insurance.

TRAC off is probably related to your check engine light.
If there's a problem with SFI, it goes to into failsafe.

How many converters does this thing have?

Because they are saying it's not a defect in the build, but an issue not related to Toyota. They are right if that is the case. Might take it to a different dealer and have them check out the Trac Off light issue. Might be related, but I'd like someone else to confirm.

If it's a rodent issue, you should pay them. If it's a manufacturing defect, Toyota should pay.

Id have your insurance work with the dealer on getting the rat wire issue fixed. Also notify them in writing and on the service report that you have the trac off issue as well. They need to see it, acknowledge it (on the service report) and diagnose it to see if it needs to be included in the insurance claim. Better now since you'll most likely be hitting your deductible anyways on the wiring job.

I moved from Washington to az last week and drove the truck. The dealer I bought my truck from told me to have a dealer in Arizona run a full diagnostic check to see which wires. Unfortunately this problem happened maybe 2 days before the move and my original dealer said they couldn't do a full check in that time and told me it was safe to drive because he said " the truck hasn't shut off or died and you haven't felt anything different than normal it should be good to go" I made it safely to az. But will be taking to a dealer here sometime this coming week. I hope it's something minor like I spliced into the wrong wire when I swapped out my switchback turn signals with a fuse. I will get insurance involved if need be.

My neighbor just spent 2200.00 to fix the rodent issue on an older Tundra. His insurance covered it, but it's not cheap if they have to replace a harness.
