Hey guys, stupid question here. I'm getting a new ride *hopefully* next week and thinking about changing out the stock TRD OR wheels for a new set. What's the proceedure for getting the TPMS sensors on the new wheels? I'm trying to get the dealer to work the rims into the deal but I'd like to hit my local store for the wheels themselves. Will the local shop put new sensor in, do I have to order them ahead of time? What about getting the ECU reprogrammed for the new sensors? If I can swing a good deal with the dealer, is it worth it just have them do all of this?

    I appreciate your thoughts!

When I've bought aftermarket wheels in the past, the place I bought them from installed new TPMS sensors in when the mounted the new tires

Just curious= what wheels are you looking for ?

I could be wrong but I though the they just swapped my factory sensors into my new wheels. Don't remember being charged for new ones but was 5 years ago.

Sensors were swapped from my TRD sport wheels to my FJ Cruiser Trail Team Wheels with no problem.Depending on what type of wheel your running the factory TPMS sensors may not fit.

Since you are buying a TRD Offroad model your new truck should come with alloy wheels from the factory. TPMS sensors from Toyota alloy wheels are a direct fit into the majority of aftermarket alloy wheels. Your dealership or tire shop will be able to simply remove the TPMS sensors from your current alloy wheels and install them into your new alloy wheels. They will work just fine. You will not need to reprogram your ECU when reusing your original sensors.

I don't want to over complicate this, but just to clarify a few other points / options:
    • If your truck was a base model or SR5 model with steel wheels, then the TPMS sensors from the steel wheels would have to be modified, changed out for alloy wheel type OEM sensors, or changed out for aftermarket sensors in order to work with alloy wheels. This does not apply to you, but it does apply to someone who's truck came with steel wheels and wants to change to alloy wheels.
    • Regarding reprogramming - if you were to purchase new OEM TPMS sensors or aftermarket TPMS sensors that come pre-programmed, you would have to have a shop or someone qualified (who has a programming tool) reprogram your ECU (again, this doesn't apply to you, but it might apply to someone reading this).
      • Alternatively, you can order blank, programmable TPMS sensors and have them programmed to mimic your original sensors. This is a good option for people that:
        1. Don't want to reprogram their ECU but need new sensors.
        2. Would like to have two sets of wheels to switch back and forth between (perhaps winter and summer sets, or maybe a trail and street set).
About me: 15 years experience in the wheel/tire industry, with nearly 10 years experience specializing in Toyota truck wheels and tires. I also have a TPMS programming tool (as well as a tire machine, wheel balancer, etc.) at my shop, and I stock programmable TPMS sensors for my customers' convenience.

If I can help answer any other questions just let me know.

Thanks for the help guys. So I'm looking at getting some black 17's for the truck, meaning I won't be able to reuse my stock 16" alloys. Will a place like Discount take the old TPMS sensor out of those and toss them in the new one for me? I have to assume they wouldn't since it would require unmounting and remounting the stock tires. Thoughts on this?

JdMeF9SiR2, thanks for that write up, that helps a lot! I appreciate it and I'm sure others on here will as well.

    You're welcome!

Any tire shop can and will be able to remove your current TPMS sensors and install them into the new wheels. It is a normal / standard procedure, as all vehicles sold after January 1, 2008 require TPMS sensors. Removing the TPMS sensors from a set of Tacoma wheels doesn't require dismounting the tires completely either (since the sidewall is tall enough to just depress after deflating the tire).

Awesome, that's a lot easier than I expected it to be! Now all I have to do is actually get a truck that I can put some new wheels on! Haha. Thanks again for the help on that man, I really appreciate the insight.

OEM and OEM type sensors are not programmable. You need a sensor that specifically states it is programmable.

I sell Schraeder EZ Sensors. They are the best in my opinion. However, you have to find a shop that has the proper tool and knows how to program them. The sensors need to be programmed BEFORE being installed into the wheels (the mistake I see installers making most often at other shops, including the national chain stores, is that they don't program the sensor before mounting the tires).

Going rate is about $45 - $55 per sensor, but I sell them to my customers purchasing wheels from me for less than that.

Hey everyone - new to the forum and this thread is super helpful. Similar situation that i have few questions about - my daughter has a 2010 Tacoma with stock steel wheels. She just bought 17 inch Tacoma alloy wheels from a 2015 TRS Sport. No - her old sensors can't be swapped. BUt i am having a heck of a time finding the exact part number for the correct sensors to fit her new wheels. Found some on Ebay, called several different Toyota dealers and each dealer has given me a different part number. I am super lost and out of my league. I have been given part number: 42607-0C070. Part number 42607-06011. An part number 42607-33011. Was also told that any Toyota alloy TPMS sensors should work for any Toyota wheels. So I defer to all of you asking for any help and resolution in this crazy matter!!

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately I'm not sure about this, hopefully one of the other guys on here can help. I'd assume like the dealer said, any of the alloy sensors would work. I'd just be a bit worried about getting them to pair up, but it's all 2nd gen so it should be ok.

Does anyone know if the TPMS sensors form Tacoma steel wheels could be used on other older model Toyota (RAV4, Highlander)steel and alloy wheels that weren't originally equipped with sensors?

So I just switched out my stock Tpms from stock steel wheels to repurposed tacoma aluminum wheels. The sensors are not completely compatible. The newer ones have a different angle and they keep loosening which leaks air every few days I have to top off at least one tire.

Frustrating, because if I new, I would have upgraded when they mounted the dam things and save some money. FYI to this thread

I might add, FYI, that 3rd Gen TPMS's ID#'s have one more digit than 2nd Gen's. I believe that the break off point was 2017. This is from what I've read and would prove worthy of investigation if one was considering installing 3rd Gen wheels on a 2nd Gen.

Again, I don't have any direct experience other than from what I've read on the forum.......

Hey everyone, got a question about the tpms sensors. I have a 2014 trd sport and just bought a set of 2019 trd sport wheels and tires. They have the factory sensors in them, what do I need to do to make sure the sensors are working! I put the wheels on the truck and the tpms light does not come on. I drove the truck about 10 miles and still no light. Does that mean the sensors are working? The light comes on when I turn the key on before starting but then goes off and stays off. Any help would be great!

I have been wondering the same as I'm looking to go from my current 2019 265/70R/17s on 4runner trail rims to 265/75R16 wheels on (2017) TRD Offroad rims. I will want them cloned so I can keep the first set.

Can anyone confirm for sure whether the 2018-2020 TPMS IDs are the same or whether the newer 2018-2020TPMS ID do have one more digit than then 2017 IDs.

Also wondering what angle TPMS the TRD Offroad rims take.
