Hello everyone. Has anyone been through the process of buying new TPMS sensors for their truck? I've got some 3rd gen wheels that I want to run on my '15, the issue is that I still have the stock steelies so I can't use those sensors on the alloy wheels. I've been going through search results and still don't have a clear idea of what all is involved with getting aftermarket Denso sensors and getting them to play nice with the 'puter of my '15 Taco.

I'm looking at Denso 5500-103 on Rockuto for the sensor.

I believe the only differences are steel wheels versus alloy wheels

I put 3rd gen alloys on to replace the steelies on my 09. Went with Autel MX sensors since we have the programming tool at my workplace.

no don’t forget if you have a spare you might have to buy five of them, you don’t have to put one in the spare though, and then you’ll have to take it to a garage and have them program the new sensors in for you

All of the aftermarket 315 MHz or dual 315/433 sensors will work. Don't need OEM. As for steel vs alloy, many (most?) aftermarket sensors will fit both wheel types. The only difference is how you orient the wide part during installation.

@2ndhandTacoman I bought Denso sensors from Rock Auto about 5 years ago when I put some 3rd gen wheels on my 07. I was in AZ at the time (I live in TX) and went to Discount Tires to purchase new tires and have them mounted on the 3rd gen wheels along with the new sensors. The tech doing the install could not get the sensors to communicate with his scanner. He said I should have written down the ID numbers so he could program them into his scanner. Long story short, I went to the manager, explained the situation while asking him to look up my 40+ year purchase history with Discount. He did, then grabbed another reader and went to my truck. Within 7 minutes the senors were scanned and communicating with my truck. I'm not sure if the tech was incompetent or just lazy. I was just glad the manager took the time to take care of a long time customer.

This is what the ID's looked like.

When I got new tires on my 2018, they broke one of the sensors. They replaced it with a generic one. It keeps the tpms light off but won't sync up to display tire pressure.

When I connect using techstream, it's stuck showing "judging" and never actually figures out which wheel is mounted on which corner. You can manually set the wheel location but if you press the tire reset button, you'll get stuck in that loop again.

I believe the Denso's have two different part numbers one for steel and one for alloys is because of the mounting angles of the TPMS stems. A lot of the other aftermarket TPMS sensors have a universal style stems.

I've had good luck with sensors from Amazon. They cost $15-$20 each and I had no issues getting them installed and programmed. I've replaced sensors in 3 vehicles with them.

I bought 4 RDE228V21 from rock auto when I got new wheels and tires to replace my 10 year old oem sensors. No issues. It's the same BH brand Discount uses and at a big savings.

Thanks for all of the replies and sharing your personal experiences with different brands. I'm leaning towards the Denzos, at $35/each it seems like a "safe " bet although some of the ones on the africian river company website show good reviews ( 4.0 +) for the 4 pk for $35.. my inner cheapskate likes that idea even better.

Same experience as above. The tire shop I've been going to for a long time (w/ a TW member as one of the managers) said he couldn't get the Amazon sensors to sync up. I didn't feel like dealing w/ the hassle so just let them sell me theirs. I think it was about 80 each, installed?

Remember, you get what you paid for.
Rock auto get the denso’s. 35+ each
Then sees ya in 10 years

4 pack for 35, do it again in 1 year, if they sync up. And will cost twice as much in the end

You don’t have to buy five as they can just remove the TPM from the computer that belongs to the spare tire
