TPMS reset won't work

    Some background:
    2009 DC TRD sport 4x4, 135,000 miles. Never saw the dash light come on before in nearly 8 years with the truck but then I never aired down before this past weekend. Took the truck on the beach and aired down to 15 psi. TPMS dash light came on as expected. Aired up a few hrs later and the light went off as expected. About 10-15 miles later the next day, the light flashed a few times and then came on steady. Stopped to check tire pressure and all is fine, 32psi just as before the beach run. Checked the manual and followed the system reset procedure. Ignition to ON (engine off), press and hold reset button until light stops flashing, turn to ACC and wait a few minutes. Only problem is when I turn the ignition to ON (engine off), the light starts blinking for a few minutes and then stays on steady. That scenario is not in the manual. I've tried holding the button while the light is blinking and while it's not blinking. No effect. Is something broken or am I just not understanding what to do? As I understand it, I shouldn't even need to reset it once the air pressure is back to what it should be, the light should go off right? It can't be a coincidence that the one time I air down, something goes wrong with the TPMS. I've had 4 sets of tires on these wheels with the same valve stem sensors so pressure has been down to 0 psi and back up as high as 40 psi when the tires were replaced. No issues then so its not like the pressure has never been changed before.

    check your spare tire, it may be low or high from your 32 psi.

    It could be that one of your batteries in the TPMS sensors has gone out.

    Had the same issue a few times. Once was my spare tpms. I belive 09 don't have it, & the other time I had to get tire pressure right at 29 when cold. Followed the procedure and after a few miles of driving it went away. Could also be a dead battery on your tpms.

    Plethora of "useless" shit
    Most likely a sensor needs to be replaced. I have an '09 as well and had two go bad just last year with the same blinking for a while then steady. Whether it is true or not I was told there is a non-replaceable battery in them that goes out or the sensor got damaged somehow.

    Did not even consider batteries. I will look into that. Just seems odd that it happens right when I triggered the light to come on and then the battery dies?

    I think those batteries life span is about 7 yrs. but they will last a little longer also. If one dies, you can bet the others aren't far behind.



    The lithium ion batteries inside TPMS sensors may last anywhere from five to 10 years. Five to six years is a more typical lifespan for older TPMS sensors. TPMS sensors don’t broadcast a continuous signal but only broadcast when the vehicle is in motion. Even then, the signal is intermittent to conserve battery life

    Update: Tried holding the SET button before turning the key to "ON". Turned the key to "ON" while already holding the SET button. Held for like 20 seconds while the TPMS light flashed the whole time. Released the button and started the truck. Light went off a few minutes later. Soooo...... what does that mean? Whatever, I'm just glad the light is off now.

    Light blinking right away and then going steady means one of the sensors isn't connecting/communicating. If it was actual low pressure the light would come on and be steady not blink.

    I have the TechStream cable and a laptop. If it comes back, I can stop by on my way home from work with it and determine which sensor is causing the issue.

    My manual says to leave the ignition in the on position for a few minutes before turning to acc or lock.

    Noticed my tire pressure looked a little low on the front tires so I put a gauge on them. Sure enough, all 4 tires down to 28psi. Aired up to 32psi and now the TPMS light on the dash is back on. Once again, can't reset it. Blinks for a minute or two when the truck is first started and then stays on steady. If I can't get the system to reset, I will find a way to disable the stupid light before I ever go and pay hundreds of dollars for new sensors.

    Keith, the light on mine came on last week when it got cold out overnight. Put air in (was 27psi p, brought it up to 30) and the light stayed on with a flash when starting the truck. I had to press the reset under the dash to get it to go off. It took a few minutes of driving to get the light to go off. I assume it has to do with the pressure sensor sampling frequency as to how fast it resets.

    The correct procedure is as follows:

    1. Inflate all tires to pressure indicated on tire placard.

    2. Turn ignition to ON position (engine off).

    3. Hold down tire pressure reset button (located on instrument panel, knee bolster or inside glove box) until TPMS telltale flashed 3 times.

    4. Initialization will be completed when ECU has received signals from all from all sensors. Process may take 2 - 3 minutes.

    At this time the TPMS Light should be off.

    does anyone know how to just disable the fucking TPMS light on the instrument cluster? I've had it with the bull shit false warnings. Today I found out that all 4 tires were 6 lbs low, so I inflated them to the correct pressure (32psi). Fucking light came on (flashing first, then solid) and will not reset. Gonna cut the goddamned wire to the light. I've been monitoring my own tire pressure since I started driving in 1973. I don't need a friggin' computer to do it for me, and I'll be damned if I'm spending $600+ at the dealer to replace the sensors.

    My wire cutters are waiting. Wiring diagram, anyone?
