Hi all. i have a 3rd gen sr 4x4 with steel wheels and bought some silver alloy sr5 takeoffs. I know with 2nd gen the tpms can't be used. i was wondering if on my 3rd gen if i can use tpms from steelies on new oem wheels. google search and tacoma world search only brings up 2nd gen results. also can i use lug nut from steelies on the wheels i bought

You can't use the Lugnuts, I've got conflicting reports on the Tpms swapping over . America's tire told me they would swap over. I'm getting my new tires on my new trd off road wheels with lug nuts . I checked my steel wheels and they have acorn lugs that won't work with alloys.

If I remember correctly, you have to orient them 180 degrees as the angle of stem to sensor for steel wheels is different than alloy. I have not performed this though. Note, when you do this, the tire installer has to be careful not to damage the TPMS when installing/removing the tire from the rim as the sensor is no longer laying out of the way.

I'm about to switch from steelies to T4R Trail Editions. My dealer was very wishy-washy on whether the TMPS would work, but ultimately said they should if you rotate them 180 degrees. If they don't work, then my plan is to just not use them and build a pressure canister to put them in and hide it under a seat so the dash lights stay off.

This is a first I'm hearing that my lugs won't work. Can someone post a part number for alloy lugs? Thanks.

Tpms sensors for aluminum wheels are 40° steel wheels are at 20°. Steel wheels sensors won't mount correctly in aluminum wheels.

I bought a set of OEM alloys for my gen2. Yes, they require different lug nuts than the steelies.
For gen3, I think part AP-5307L is what you need for alloys (chrome)

I had to buy new sensors and lugs when I switched to TRD OR wheels. I got impatient and wanted my tires mounted. Americas gave me a pretty good discount on sensors and new lugs. Factory TRD Wheels will need flanged lugs. Be careful because some aftermarket wheels will need high clearance slim lugs.

Many tire shops will not mess with sensors for liability, so bringing in some eBay sensors off a Lexus might not fly with them.

Steel when lugs on Left, Toyota Alu wheels on right.

EDIT: Senors were special order $60 a piece, Lugnut were $6 a piece. They gave me a pretty good price break cause I buy a lot of stuff from them, but my $400 wheel swap got expensive quick.

Lots of people run head first into this issue. Was 17 years since I bought a new vehicle, who knew?
Some people have swapped their Steel TPMS into Alloy and lived to post about it. Discount Tire told me there can be an issue with sizing such that small leaks happen or that the sensors can become damaged inside the tire. A tacomaworld user has been driving for 2 weeks now with them "turned around" in his alloy wheels. YMMV. I found some used ones on eBay (4 for around $50) so will report back when I've had them installed. You can't replace the batteries if that's what yer thinking, they are potted in. Thanks Obama...
I will have to buy new lug nuts. <vent>its so great that tacoma built two different types of wheels for the same vehicle that you cannot swap out the lugs or the tpms sensors. </vent>

Discount (America's) Tires quoted me the following, seems cheapest so far
    lugs: $3/each x 6 x 4:
72 for lugs + 92 for install with tpms reprogramming
they'll sell me tpms replacements $60/each, but I'll try the ones on eBay first...

Here's a bunch of notes I took, perhaps useful to yall...

So i have an SR5 that came with steel wheels. I got a set of the SEMA TRD wheels and just flipped the sensors. They worked..ish. I dont have the annoying yellow light on, but i also have the " --" on all 4 tires. How am i able to fix this? If i get new sensors, which ones do i even get?

Have you driven around with sensors? I just put new Denso sensors on and I had to get on the freeway for them to start reading. Also try pushing the TPMS reset button for 3 light flashes.

The Denso sensors are the same as OEM and a little less expensive. Should be Denso 550-0106 for 2016 later Tacoma's with alloy wheels.

You'll probably have to get new sensors. When I swapped over from my stock steelies to the alloys, I had to order TPMSs for alloy wheels, and installed regular valvestems as a holdover till the new sensors came in.

My corner readouts have never been there with the steel sensors swapped 180. No yellow light, but no PSI readout. Had the dealer reset them once and the PSI went away after the next rotation and has never come back no matter how many resets I've done.
Just ordered the proper sensors to get it right at the next set of tires soon. (Found them for 49.00 apiece. 42607-06030)

That is what I'm going to do when I make the switch to alloy wheels.

I'm going to let my little light shine. LOL! If it bothers me I'll get a monkey face sticker like the lady in the commercial done to her car. Put a monkey face sticker over the warning light.
