We all know the indestructible Toyota Hilux is forbidden fruit for those of us in the United States. And no matter how much we beg Toyota to bring the ultra-capable, supremely-tough pickup to our shores, it'll likely never happen. What makes matters worse, though, is that there's a Hilux-based SUV named the Fortuner, and it's got everything you'd ever want in an off-roading family hauler. The updated version for 2021 makes us even more jealous.

I thought I read somewhere online that all new sold trucks in the US had to be made in North America?

What makes a Hilux more indestructible than a Tacoma. Is it the diesel engine or something else?

    It’s ugly. Definitely a Toyota.

You might be thinking about the Chicken Tax. I don't think that there's a rule saying new trucks have to be made in North America, but anything imported is subject to a 25% tax. NAFTA allows trucks to be built in Canada and Mexico without being subject to the tax.

Everything diesel automatically gets labeled cooler for some reason.

Anything you have to constantly add fluid to because of some silly law isn’t cool.
