    Hey,

I did post a similar question in the new members forum, but...

I just bought a new TRD Sport 4x4, and I was wondering what everyone thought of the Toyota extended warranty package? Should I go for it? It was 96months/100000miles for about $1900

A new Toyota already comes with a 3 year warranty, so really it is just 5 years. Most issues would appear in the first 3 years right?

    Thanks

Waste of money (usually), but do whatever helps you sleep at night. Remember, they would not sell them if they did not make money selling them!

Timing cover or coolant tube leak and that warranty sounds cheap.

Exactly. Remember, the companies selling and backing these warranties are in business to make money, and they have smart people figuring out how to price them. On average, the company selling the warranty comes out ahead. Of course, there are exceptions and people can save a bunch of money by having them, but they're the minority.

Read 3/36, 5/60 toyota warranty coverage. Read extended warranty coverage and when it kicks in.

I can do maintenance and most repairs in my garage, so I self insure. If a major repair issue comes up I can not fix in my garage, the money I saved on warranties can cover a major repair. In 40 years of owning Toyota vehicles, I have never had a repair I could not fix in my garage.

Thanks for the advice, honestly leaning towards not taking it. I will see if I can get the price down and reconsider though.

What are some common issues on this model of Tacoma? 2023 TRD Sport 4x4

If you drive it in town and it gets used like an Accord the warranty is probably not necessary.

I use my truck primarily for work, secondarily for long a road trips. I got the warranty, but I also put 20-22K a year on the truck, pull a trailer every day, and haul 3 dudes and tools at all times. I figure the constant “stress test” warranted the warranty. It’s all about need and cost.

Also know that making sure your ability to cover the unfortunate “eventualities” in life (whether that’s cars, health, skate boarding accidents, gambling addiction, etc.,) is part of all this shit and should factor into your decision to invest in a new vehicle.
    Best of luck!

They have this figured out. Any manufacturers defect will show up in the 1st 20,000 miles. If it makes it that far it will easily go 150,000 miles. And that is just about the time the extended warranty expires.

They also inflate the estimated costs of repairs to scare people into buying one. They may quote you $5000 for a repair at the dealership that an independent mechanic can do for $2000. The dealership can do if for $2000 too.

Then there is the deductible that you have to pay to use the extended warranty. Often an independent shop can do the repair for about what you pay for the deductible.

And the warranty doesn't cover stuff that is most likely to need to be replaced.

There are the rare times when it would pay to have it. But if you think long term, as in a lifetime of vehicle ownership, you'll come out ahead to avoid them.

Has anyone added the 10year 125k mile Toyota warranty right before the 5 year 60k warranty is up? I drive about 15-20k a year, so I'll be at 60k in 3 years. Depending on family needs I may have to go with a bigger vehicle at that point so I don't want to buy the warranty now if I can avoid it.

To me $1900 for a TOYOTA 10 year 125k powertrain warranty is a no brainer for a 3rd gen. $100 dollar deductible. Toyota OEM parts. Some big dollar issues show up here between 60 and 125k miles.

I bought the toyota platinum warranty on my used 18 Tacoma that I bought in 2020. Truck had 24k on it and is covered to 2028 or 100k. I paid around $1200-1300. I’ve used it three times including a front diff replacement. It has paid for itself 3 times over, no brainer that I would Do it again, only through Toyota though, they do make it easy and the unused portion can be refunded upon trading the vehicle or transferred upon selling. On the other hand we bought the same coverage for my wife’s brand new 4Runner back in 2020, it has 68k currently and have never used the warranty.

I waited until 34 months after purchase.
Sent an email to Jerry with all the needed info… he called me couple hours later. Took 5 minutes to complete.
    7yr/100K for $1025.

Did not know prior, but it comes with roadside assistance (jump start, gas, tow, flat tire etc and will cover lodging if more than 150 miles from nearest dealership.) And a rental car if truck is kept overnight.

Transferable & refundable. I haven’t bought a warranty on my last 6 vehicles but labor & parts have increased so much that I adjusted my mental calculations.

I got the 10 year, 100k mile platinum warranty for around $2200. Warranty repairs I have received this far have totaled over $5k and were near the 90k mark of the warranty so, for me, it was well worth it.

That being said, my truck is also a late 2016 and basically a first model year truck so you may not run into the issues I've had.
