I didn't realize they used the Port and Direction to also affect torque.

More than a few members of this board have claimed that DI doesn't cause carbon deposits, and that DI was basically flawless on it's own. They also said that any attempt to clean EGR or recycled air with a catch-can was dumb because there is no issue to begin with.

Funny how the engineers that this guy talked to try suppress the carbon deposit issue.

However, I remember a video where Mike Sweers openly boasted about Port/DI Toyota's self cleaning mode.

Maybe the folks at Toyota aren't so bad?

Here is Mike referring the the Tacoma's self-cleaning feature.

BMW started using direct injection many years ago and has had problems with carbon deposits on the intake valves, so have many other manufacturers. Having an injector in the intake port is a great remedy, today many manufacturers do this.

The older Lexus IS 250 v6 was also just DI. they also had huge problems with carbon build-up. The 06 to 09 had recall, to have engines torn down and rebuilt (upper half) due to carbon build-up. I had an 06, they replaced engine, because it was so bad.

So basically what you are telling us is that you didn't know the basics before, but you do now. Congratulations. Try reading tech articles next time (from reputable sources) instead of watching youtube all day long. You will be smarter for it.

I don’t recall anyone saying that DI doesn’t form carbon deposits.
Fords ecoboost was having carbon issues so they copied Toyota and added port injection to their motors.

Mike Sweer's video above states that port injection cleans direct injectors in cylinders.

Top Tier fuel should help keep direct injectors in cylinders clean.

The problem with DI is VALVE deposits, which Top Tier fuel can't touch, which the video does NOT address.

The port injectors will still help with valve deposits.
