When I was doing my valve cover gasket, I noticed most hoses were looking good. A couple had a bit of hairline cracking near the very end, where the clamp attaches it. I reattached everything and it's all good, no issues. I'm a little concerned about the age of the hoses most likely approaching 20 years.

Should I replace all my hoses in the engine bay? These hoses have pre-built bends and are very expensive from Toyota as OEM. Normally I'm all for OEM, but these hoses will add up to being very expensive very quick. If bulk vacuum hose works just as well, despite not having the bends, is that a good idea? Will I have issues with metric vs USA diameter hoses?

Also should I replace the flexible brake hoses? Mine show no signs of damage but they're probably 20 years old and I'd hate to get a leak. They again aren't cheap though.

Part of me says preventative maintenance is good. Part of me says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Certainly if I were to replace every part on my truck that's 20 years old, that'd be insanely expensive.

Based on changing out the vacuum hoses on my 1997 flat six motorcycle, I'd say YES
change out at least all the ones that are vacuum hoses. At first I figured changing out
stiff (and some rotten) old hoses would be a good thing on principle, it turned out to
actually make my bike run even better...

My bike called for all bulk hose, if Toyota used special shaped hose, its probably important
so that the hoses stay open around sharp corners or something...

-Mike "the rotten ones were just carb drain hoses, they didn't make the bike run better"

I've replaced my upper radiator hose with an OE replacement from Autozone, came with the bend and all, it was a little too long so had to cut some length off of it. You might want to consider this route to save some dollar versus from the dealership. I try to replace everything w/ OEM, but IMO a hose is a hose.

Jesus, this is one of those things that you definitely shouldn't waste your money buying from the factory/dealer.

Just get some bulk line of the proper size and make sure it's not kinked.

As for the brake lines, if you're worried about it, replace them. But again, OEM is not where I'd be looking. For the same price, (if not less, lol) than going to the dealer, you can get steel braided lines from Wheeler's or something - definitely an upgrade over the stock rubber ones.

I went with bulk silicone hose from Amazon about a year ago. The truck has been running great. With the 3.4 there is plenty of room for healthy loops so pinching really isn't a problem.

I use clear vinyl tubing/hose when replacing vacuum hoses. Does not dry rot, like the rubber/foam ones

Anyone know what sizes I get? If I get 5 ft each size from 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm it adds up in price pretty quick.

Also wondering about fuel hose sizes.

I doubt you need all those sizes. Just measure the ones you want to replace.

Chances are, if there is any oil leaking onto the rubber hoses they're shot or going to be shot in short order. @jbrandt hit the nail on the head. Buy 5 feet of the common sizes and go to town for $10 from your local auto parts store.

Does the local auto parts store sell metric hose? I understand it stretches, but I've had bad experience on my motorcycles using wrong sized hoses.

I actually found this which looks pretty nice.

https://www.siliconeintakes.com/index.php?products_id=591 I'm thinking that, plus some extra 8mm hose (one user reported running out of 8mm hose).

Go to Advance Auto Parts and buy the hoses you need by the foot.
Replace as much as you can,

20 year old hoses will be at the end of their life.

I replaced every hose I had last year.

Do NOT go OEM and no need too,
    Way to expensive

    Gates makes the best BTW

I just replaced all the hoses under the hood that deal with my evap system when it was throwing code and wouldn't pass the emmissions inspection after my frame replacement. I took my old hoses to Oreilly's cut them past the end so we could match thr ID of the old hoses to that of new bulk hose.

The only hose I had to buy OE was the formed hose that goes from the charcoal can to the tank(I think).

Heater core hoses on the firewall need to be done and the plastic heater valve will actually rot and crumble so I found out

I bought some hose in all the sizes O’Reilly’s has. They have gates hoses which seemed just ok. I didn’t use half of the sizes. Overall I’m not impressed with the hoses because even with all possible sizes of Gates that O’Reilly carries (quite a few), there were some hoses that simply did not fit right.

Also worth noting a few hoses have special bends (at least on my CA truck) which cannot be done with a regular hose unless maybe you got a handful of 90 degree fittings. If you force the bend the hose just collapses.

Overall I did most of the truck with the hose from O’Reilly’s. I had to use tape to add thickness on a couple I’ll fitting hoses so the clamps would work. Janky but it works for now.

I find measuring hoses is kind of tough unless you’re willing to sacrifice the hose. Measuring a used hose where it’s been on a fitting, the hose has a larger ID and OD than in the middle. Measuring just the OD is only half the story. The ID and the OD have to be right on some hoses for the hose to go on and for the clamp to also work.

    Overall, meh.
