I read somewhere on TW that Toyota is going to Stop Making 2.7 - when will this happen - why would they do this - will we still be able to get parts ? Some of us have up to 350K - I was hoping to go as long as possible - any information or links appreciated.

I'm not planning to get a new Tacoma, but that's alarming news if it's true IMO. As for why, seems like so many manufacturer are doing it to improve fuel economy. In doing so, some negatives are introduced, such as reliability. From what I've researched the 2.7L is one of the most reliable 4 cylinder engines in the world.

Since there are so many and at this time it's still in production, I would think parts should be available for a long time, even after it's not being manufactured.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they stopped using it in automotive applications.
It’s probably easier to redesign a whole different engine since the new thing is forced induction and hybrid.

I’d say the 2.7 will still be around for a good while on the industrial side.

The 2.7 is underpowered by today's norms and can't pass emissions standards without a manifold air injection pump. However, info posted by Carmaker1 says the engine will carry into the 4th gen for fleet customers.

The 2.7 was killed three years ago in Canada, if I remember correctly.

Usually new OEM parts are going to still be made and available for 20+ years post end of production in an actual vehicle.

Then those popular vehicles made for many many years with the same base powerplant will certainly have an aftermarket following that will go on for many many decades.

Finally, due to the vast amount of these being made over the years, the availability of parts from scrap yards and barns will be around for many many years as well.

Sorry to get you panicked man. That wasn’t my intent. I’m not an insider and don’t have definitive information. Carmaker has suggested the 2.7 will be used in the 4th gen. I want Toyota to keep the 2.7, but I’m concerned they won’t. That’s why I’ve been debating getting a 2.7 just in case.

Good to know about things like this - I'm glad you mentioned it. This seems like the trend - tried and true engines seem to be that they're being phased out. Kind of like manual transmissions. I know for a few years it hasn't been available with the 2.7L. Good to know about future models so you can considering buying one that has what you want now.

I love my 2.7L. Never has failed me in a 11 years.

Very dependable engine. Haven't had a problem.

Plenty of power for me when I "floor" it. :)

Be sad to see it go, very easy to work on if needed.

I've only changed the air filter, the gas cap & battery on my truck.

Oil change every few thousand miles with a D3 or Fram Ultra filter & Mobil 1.

I've read that the next gen will be a 2.7 TURBO charged engine.

I wonder how a turbo engine will hold up after 200k miles, which seems to be a routine achievement for the current 2.7L. Several manufacturers are retiring 6 cylinder engines with turbo 4 cylinder engines in their place.

That's the BIG question. A turbo will see more wear and tear on parts and will require premium fuel! I had a WRX before my taco. Fun, but had turbo lag and rev hang- interested to see how Taco owners/drivers feel about that. Turbo with DI can also gunk up the engine and need cleaning every 30-40K.

I dont think the Toyota will mimic the hp jump of a WRX. Smaller turbo shouldnt have much lag and the new Subarus as well as the Civic turbos all get by on regular unleaded

Oh it def will, I bet close/if not over 300hp for this new turbo 2.7. Lag will be there, it's how the turbo spools, rev hang will depend on the fly wheel weight they go with. The new Chevy 2.7 Turbo high output has 310hp and over 400 foot lbs. of torque. The new civic Si, and WRX DO require 91 octane or above (same with new turbo Broncos), you CAN run regular but you see a noticeable loss of power. non turbo Subi's are fine with regular.

I turboed my 2013 at 102k, and now have 158k. Running a mere 8psi on stock fueling has still woken up the truck noticeably, like how the truck should have come from Toyota. Compression tests (performed in Sept as a yearly health check) have me at 175psi +/- 2psi across all 4 cylinders, oil consumption or contamination (verified by Blackstone Labs) has not increased, nor has the cooling system been affected. The 2.7 is a great platform to boost on, especially if you ditch the stock hypereutectic pistons (currently the weak part, with around a 400hp limit followed closely by the rods). Other than the stock cat going out (Which was a recall anyways), I have yet to have an issue or experience any higher maintenance costs over the last 56k miles.

I dont think they would use the same engine, likely start with a clean slate. And the Ford twin turbos have very little turbo lag.
The Outback turbo as well as the standard civic turbo burn regular. There was no lag that I felt in the one I drove. It will be tuned more for torque than HP would be my assumption

sounds awesome. I would love to turbo my 2.7 at 6 psi. how much in total do you think your turbo build cost? my budget is around $3K...

Right about that 3K mark from start to finish. Biggest cost was the turbo, followed by the manifold/downpipe combo, then the catless midpipe. Everything else is little but adds up.

This engine is used world wide in a variety of applications. In many markets you can either settle for a “measly” 2.7L 2tr gas or a diesel. Funny enough over seas you typically see the 2tr mated to 6 speed manuals instead of the plebeian 5 spd manual we got here. Anyways, point being is that it’s a predominant engine, parts will be available for a long time to come.
