I have A 2015 Toyota Tacoma V6 with 15,000 miles on it and for the longest time I’ve had a ticking sound coming from my engine bay it bugs the crap out of me and i want to know why it ticks. I’ve had people tell me that it is normal for Tacoma’s to have a ticking sound coming from there engin bay. If anyone can give me some insight on why it does this and what i can Do to make it stop it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Normal. You can turn the key to "off" to stop it.

    Normal.

Not driving your truck will stop the ticking.

The clock ticking and tapping noise is normal. Keep the oil topped off as the engine burns off that 0.5 to 1 quart during the normal the 5000/7500 mi interval- and that will keep the engine as quiet and muffled as possible.

There also is a pinging noise under certain load and warm temperature conditions, when running low quality 87 octane fuel with 10% ethanol (For my Tacoma I avoid using Sheetz and Wawa and QuickCheck fuels on the upper east coast, as well as stations that buy old fuel while adding water for re-sale at a 0.10 cent discount). The fuel injectors have been said to be noisy as well, at cold temperatures.

The sound is coming from the vacuum switching valve, and the valve is connected to the intake manifold by one bolt. The valve is making the noise but it gets amplified by the plastic against the bolt. Apparently you can remove the cover and access the bolt, and find some rubber washers or o-rings to put on the bolt to reduce the noise considerably, if not completely. Source: my friend has an FJ and this is what he told me.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not telling you to do this, and I don't know if it affects any warranty or anything in any way. I haven't done it mostly because I'm lazy and I don't mind having my radio slightly louder to drown it out.

My 09 did it and I was concerned it was a lifter or something else critical. I got my 2015 @ one year old with 20K miles and it did it. I soon discovered here that it is a normal sound.

That’s just as common as rust.

Yes, I’d recommend synthetic oil if you want flexibility in when to change the oil beyond the 5000 mi interval. I have exclusively used synthetic oil on 4-5 different cars since 2004. That said, if you have time to immediately change the oil exactly at 5000 miles when the maintenance comes on, then regular 5w30 is fine to use.

I think it sounds and runs better using 93 fuel, I’ve ran it pretty much the life of mine and i’m at 111k miles.

I had 22r 22re 2.7 never heard them. These 4.0 are held in such high regard and I can’t understand why a motor that sounds like a sewing machine is normal?

in California that pinging under load is pretty standard with our gas. Using our premium (91) helps minimize it.

Because almost every one of the 4.0 engines make that sound, and they've lasted for hundreds of thousands of miles. It's a vacuum valve located on the driver's side of the engine. It's noisey . It's it the engine itself.

    The Toyota tick. Everyone I ever owned. 92 4banger, 86 v6, 03 dblcab, 01 rav4 and '13 rav4. They all ticked. Annoying but harmless.
