Testing the waters out there for a 1997-2004 1st Gen Tacoma 4x4 with a clean frame, ~similarish~ mileage. Preferably V6 but I'm open minded.

This is a 1995 T100 SR5 4WD (top tier for these) with 176k miles on it. No engine light or codes. Not in a rush to get rid of it. Legendary Japanese import pick up truck made exclusively for the US market. The quality of these is quite renowned,

Offering it up because my first truck was an 04 Tacoma and I've been missing having one around. It got smashed by a falling tree in a storm a few years back. Hard finding one these days with a good frame.

    Cash price: $12,000

If you're interested in the truck give me a text at 443-975-6759

    Located in Maryland. Clean title.

    Basic details on the truck:

    -1995 T100 SR5 Extended Cab
    -Made in Japan
    -3.4L 5VZ-FE V6
    -A340F Automatic Transmission
    -Mechanical 4x4
    -Torsion bar front suspension
    -Power windows, mirrors, and locks
    -Bench seats
    -Bed liner
    -Original Cardinal Red paint
    -16 inch Tacoma steel rims
    -Clean smoke free interior
-Clean frame. (Very mild surface rust consistent for a 30 year old truck) No rot. Has been lanolin undercoated. Tons of before pics to show condition beforehand.
    -New stereo
    -Sliding rear window
    -Rear side windows open

    Maintenance details:

    -New Micheline defender tires
    -New brake pads and calipers
    -New OEM fuel Pump
    -New OEM fuel filter
    -New OEM starter
-Timing belt/water pump done at 174k
-New valve cover gaskets at 175k
    -Valve clearances corrected 175k
    -New OEM Radiator
-New OEM spark plugs and wires
-Transmission drain and fill done at 171k (fluid is cherry)
-Fuel induction service done at 171k
    -Just replaced engine air filter
    -Just had an oil change
    -Just cleaned MAF sensor

This truck is refreshed and ready for the next 2 decades.

    The "bad":

-Gas tank door lock is broken but the door opens and stays shut just fine. Easy fix.
-Almost ready for a new exhaust
-Some minor rust on the bed around the wheel arches. It's been coated with Surface Shield.
-Lots of rock chips in the paint on the front of the hood. These have been touched up.
-Antenna was removed and placed in the engine bay before I got it. It is still connected to the radio.
-Speakers don't sound good. May replace those soon

You still interested in a trade? If so I’ve got an 03 4x4 reg cab project Taco with 295k miles.

I’m about to list it here in a month or so.

If it had similar mileage, I may be more interested. What's "project Taco" mean?

I feel you there. No worries.

And I called it a “project Taco” because that’s what it’s been for me for a while, and I don’t really have the budget or motivation to see it through the way that I know some folks on here would or could. I’d rather it go to somebody with the time, dime, and knowhow than let it sit in my garage.

It’s a 2003 Regular cab 4x4 stick shift Taco SR5 with bucket seats and 295k miles. Only aftermarket stuff I can discern (all done by previous owner) are a small body lift, a new head unit, and 33” Dexteros. The previous owner also deleted the cat.

Body/frame: It was bought new in NY, but has lived in eastern Kentucky since getting a recall frame (to my knowledge, but can confirm later). Frame and mounts look great besides a little surface rust/scale. Some body rust on rear passenger quarter (including a hole) and bottom of driver door. The steelie wheels have a little surface rust too (pictured below).

Mechanical: I got a great deal on it, and it ran great for about a year as my DD. Then one winter day it would crank but stall out after a couple seconds of rough idle and white smoke.

No check engine lights. Battery was fine and basically brand new. Oil level was fine, no bubbles in coolant either. No leaks on the ground either. The gas wasn’t old and the fuel pump worked, so I checked fuses and relays. All were fine too.

I pulled the sparks and they got spark just fine, though they could use a change so I did (along with the boots). Same result: crank and no fire.

Tried again the next day and same results, but now with check engine lights. Code reader wouldn’t communicate with it. Neither would the next three I tried, including one I borrowed from O’Reilly’s.

So I pulled the ECM. Circuits to the IAC and TPS were blown, so I sent it off to get remanufactured. In the meantime (it took them a month to do it), I pulled the throttle body, IAC, and TPS. The latter read ohms through the roof so I replaced it. The IAC had a spider’s nest in it (lol) and it was grimy so I replaced it too. Also got the throttle body clean as a whistle while I was at it. The clutch position sensor was bad, so I went ahead and replaced that too. I also changed the oil since I figured uncombusted gas from trying to start it had likely run down into the pan.

A month or so later when the ECM came back, I tried again and got a similar result, only no white smoke and it ran a tiny bit better and a second or two longer before dying. The OBD reader still wouldn’t communicate either, so I figured it’s some sort of electrical fault or bad ground, maybe.

That’s when I kind of moved on from it, honestly. I disconnected the battery, siphoned the gas, and let it rest in my garage since last year.

I’m no electrician, can’t afford to hire one, and don’t feel like just shotgunning parts at it without codes to go by (esp. if the whole thing is electrical to begin with). My next step would be to replace the MAF (though it reads fine and wasn’t too dirty).

I’m sure this would be a breeze for plenty of folks on here to troubleshoot into a badass little DD. It sure was when I drove it. It could make a great trail or wood rig too.

I’m gonna list it here soon once I get some good updated pics, esp. of the frame (probably this weekend).

I’m located in Lexington, Kentucky. If it’s something you’re interested in I’m happy to talk, but no worries if not and GLWS

    EDIT:

    Other odds and ends:
    • Parking brake cable frayed behind dash. I have the replacement part and plan to swap it out if sale isn't quick.
    • AC also blows hot. I haven't checked for leaks or recharged it yet (though I have a bottle of refrigerant with pressure gauge to go with sale/trade). Heater, fan, and diverter all work great, though.
    • Fuel door closes but is missing its spring

Yea, I'm sure you'd understand, this T100 is a properly running rig with low miles. Not saying 295 is a killer for a Tacoma... Would rather not trade for something I'd have to fiddle with a huge deal. Those are nice little trucks for sure. Especially a stick. It should go quick if you put the right price tag on it. And I appreciate your in depth honest right up on it.

Totally understand. That's a slick truck you got and it should sell quick in that condition.

And thanks. Yeah, rather than "offloading" my problem onto someone else, I'm hoping a motivated buyer can go into the project with all the info they need to decide if it's right for them. There're some super knowledgeable grease monkeys on here that'll know exactly what to do with it lol

A black one drives by me every day on my way to work, super clean like this one too. Wrong coast though.
