I heard about this on a Toyota u tube video. I figured there will be blowback about it. Glad to hear they are backing down.

I just wish it would continue to run while I load my dog in his crate.

Agreed. The auto off when I open the door is a terrible "feature". Push the button, if no fob is detected, then shut it off.

Toyota said it’s a safety feature. But most other manufactures can do it without shutting off and they have push start too. I’m thinking about an aftermarket system, but not till I need one.

I don't know how people didn't understand the features of their vehicle at the time of purchase... Toyota connect is pretty well advertised and you get the brochure with your vehicle.

It was never advertised as anything different... you get a couple years of a "trial" and then if it expires you lose those features.

You can still use aftermarket products to use autostart.

Enough customers are put off by Toyotas lacking remote start systems as it is, this could potentially push customers away.

Problem is when your key fob is dead. That wouldn't allow the truck to move even though you can still use it to start the truck.

I’m disappointed in Toyota a little with this key Fob issue. We have a 20 4Runner limited and pay the money for Toyota connect because my wife wants the remote start on her phone, no big deal. I looked at trading my taco in on a 22 4 runner. Besides the $2k addendum that the dealer won’t budge on, Toyota raised the MSRP on a limited over $2800 in two model years while having changed nothing on an already 13 year old design. Pandemic, inflation …yea yea I get it but still, how much is enough?

It’s so terribly difficult to push a button. Imagine how hard it must be for guys like me who actually have to get in, push the clutch in and turn a key.

So nobody should enjoy their remote starters without having to pay more for it because you have a manual transmission with no remote start? What a smart ass, useless and ignorant comment.

We can still get into the vehicle and start it just like your “old reliable key”….
We aren’t being charged to do this.

Haha, you’re not wrong. That doesn’t mean it’s not funny how much complaining goes on with reference the the remote start on the forum.

Complains about people complaining about shit they pay for...

Like I said, it was a feature I never had before and I made sure was included with the vehicle, only to find out that it's somehow tied into a subscription that it should not be tied into.

Fair enough. I was cranky this morning when I responded. Having gone the last 8 years in a Tundra without remote start I can see your point, but now that I have it there is no going back, plus I think it’s chintzy of Toyota to put a block on the key fob start.

For sure, it’s a dick move to block the key fob if you don’t pay for the app. My two previous vehicles before this Tacoma were both push button start and proximity entry so there’s been plenty of times I walk up to the truck and forget that I can’t just pull the handle and have it open.

No one is debating that. The issue is that they were going to disable the physical button on the key fob. Being able to start your truck from anywhere is a bonus feature that you should pay for. Being able to start it from X feet away with the button and remote start that is already part of the truck you paid for is entirely different

Like imagine if Netflix was a bonus subscription you could get but when it lapsed and you don't re-subscribe, all the Blu-ray discs you own won't play anymore.
