Toyota Reliability??? My Brand New Toyota Tacoma Is Not What I Expected.

I like his objectivity and balance, but I don't share all his grievances. Maybe I need to own a wrangler to understand. lol

One of his grievances I identified with is the finickiness of the 4hi <=> 4lo transition. I have learned to put the taco in 4lo way before I get stuck. It's more fun to drive off road in 4lo anyway. Who needs those hiway gears when not on the hiway?

The issue about seeing his fathers picture on the head unit could be his phone's problem rather than the truck's. I have definitely had experienced some flakiness with my phone-truck integration, but I am not sure what to blame.

In any case, I found it interesting and a decently well done youtube video

Sounds more like operator error than actual reliability problems

When I think of reliability I think of is this truck going to leave me stranded? It could happen but it’s highly unlikely with the Tacoma. I have a better chance at getting an easy 200,000-300,000 out of it than I do it being a pos. You can’t say that about most vehicles past or present. Reliability is the #1 reason I keep buying these things.

I have the same issue getting into 4lo. Also, I agree the rear speakers have a very low output compared to the front.

All of this went wrong in 14k miles:
I had a manual transmission fail on the highway while in gear.

I had an oil filter housing crack and leak oil while driving.

I had constant issues with brakes/brake booster

This was on a 2015 Jeep JKU Rubicon. These are true reliability issues.

phone syncing issues is a refinement issue and a modification that causes a known vehicle reaction is to be expected. These are not reliability issues.

Sounds like a few honest valid complaints to me.
Taillights going out in the dead of night, certainly a reliability issue. He cant shift to 4-lo when stopped on a grade. Transmission hunting complaints all over TW.

When did “reliability” become “feature set”? Did the truck break down? No? Sounds like your expectations were incorrect not the truck’s reliability.

I used to be subscribed to the guy but I unsubscribed recently. He claims to be objective but, IN MY OPINION, he feigns innocence in an attempt to satisfy his own personal biases towards the Tacoma.

The video where he first takes the Tacoma out in the snow and complains about how quickly it got stuck compared to the jeep he's with when he tried to get through some deep snow from a stand still whereas the jeep was moving at decent speed before getting to the snow. Like come on man at least be a bit better at hiding your biases.

This guy’s a dweeb. See through the click bait people. His problems are nonsense brought about by a crappy job fitting a bumper and botched raptor lights or something. Plus it helps to understand how to use 4Lo.

My RAV4 Hybrid sometimes doesn’t sync with Apple CarPlay, doesn’t get as good of mpg as a Prius, isn’t as offroad capable as a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, and won’t tow as much as a Tacoma. Therefore it’s unreliable and probably won’t last me.

Look at me. I can sound like an idiot too.

So hundreds of thousands of us buying these trucks every year and this guy that modified his and drives over huge boulders and somehow he got issues . He should go and buy a jeep then talk reliability o_O!
No, you got nothing to worry. It's a Toyota

I'm good at criticizing things, maybe I should be a YouTuber and make enough money to build all of my vehicles the way I want for the express purpose of bitching about how bad they are.

Is the shifting into 4-lo really a thing? I haven't experienced that issue. Maybe it's an automatic thing? Mine let me shift just fine stuck in the mud at a 30 degree incline. I also would say that a lot of the things he discussed (phone image, speaker volume, cruise, power inverter, etc.) aren't really reliability issues so much as design choices that he disagrees with. Valid complaints, but don't speak to the reliability. The tail light issue is new to me though, and I would probably be upset about that if it happened to me.

4lo <=> 4hi is definitely a thing. It’s well documented on this forum. It’s not a reliability issue in the sense that it breaks and needs repair, but it’s an annoyance.

I think people are focusing too much on the word reliability in the title and not listening to the legitimate grievances in the body of the video.

That’s what gets the clicks ;)

If I want to hear bitching and moaning about my 3rd gen, I just log into tacomaworld 3rd gen section and can hear it from my friends reliably everyday about how much the truck sucks.

I don’t need YouTube videos for that, from strangers.

Gear hunting was a part of Car&Drive in 2015 issue of their side by side review of Tacoma and Colorado. Stupid to bring this up every week, especially when fixes are available and he has done the same to his LR.
He could have bought SR and mod a crap out of it with this skills. His is making money on YT, he quit his day job.

This guy (Dirt Lifestyle) has great content - I was glad he took on the Tacoma project (out of his own pocket)!

He’s really has put the truck through it’s paces in this series, and he’s been very complementary of the Tacoma in videos leading up to this one. I feel like his experience has been somewhat atypical of a normal Toyota ownership, but his complaints are all valid.

As far as changing 4wd modes from hi to lo or back... once your stopped its slicker than goose poop on a wet lawn. Just a matter of twisting a knob and your done.

Seriously? He purposely put the word “reliability” in the title. Those aren’t “reliability issues, you said so yourself. I guess he needs to change his clickbait title then. . .
