@BuzzardsGottaEat , I noticed you had the Hankook dynapros on your truck. How do you like them. I'm on my second set, and will continue to buy them until they quit making them.

They’ve lasted so long they’re starting to crack of old age haha. They still look nearly new in tread depth to be honest. It’s kind of bizarre. When I bought them I kind of saw it as a cheap alternative to better tires. I soon realized they’re a great tire regardless. They heavily popular up here in winter wonder land in the Dakotas. Almost every truck and SUV I see has them on. I do run Falkens on my 4Runner though.

Blame the EPA for the newer vehicles .

Having to meet fuel mileage standards Weight saving every place Computer controlled engine!!

I do like having the OBDII system instead of counting blinks

I have many of the 22re engine vehicles even the Turbo version yet once I got the Tacoma 3.4 after a learning curve I never bothered with them again . One just needs a starter put back in.

OP you anyplace close to Eastern Pa For that $2500.00 It would get you enough parts to build a truck and lots of extras

Given the choice I would go 3.4 before a 22re if building a new engine

Best of both worlds 3.4 swap in pick up with SAS

If your into the older 4x4`s check out Yota Tech!

    Problem is your $2500 cost.

-you will not get anything for that price that is going to need nothing.
It’s going to end up costing more to update/repair.

Double up your purchase cost, you may find a solid 1st gen. But even then, like the rest of us it will be a fun project to throw money at.

    Have fun looking

I have an 83 Toyota motorhome. Original 22R with no running problems. Not sure on miles on the rig. Odo stopped working :) Over 200K on my 98 with the 3.4. Both are fantastic and haven't had many problems at all. It really doesn't matter. What matters is how it was maintained and treated. Was it taken care of by some dumbass that revved the shit out of it as soon as it was started? was the oil never changed on a regular basis? Things that most used vehicle buyers will never know. It's a gamble on either but I am going to put a 3.4 into my 83 for some more Herspers ;) No replacement for displacement ;)

I saw two Toyota dolphins the other day. Really made me want one but I would have to swap out that 90HP little engine that could.

Yes. The 22R although robust is severely underpowered for my rig. But - 4 speed manual with 4.88s in the heavy duty dually rear end move it along well. Not fast but it gets the job done. I hang out with the truckers and put my hazards on. lol

But isn't it true that you can get a brand new 22RE engine for $1000 USD installed?

Maybe ill go with the Tacoma,

Whatever I can get a better deal on.

    I am in San Diego

Okay, maybe a better question to ask is--
What are the Differences Between the 22RE and the 2.7 / 3.4

What made the Toyota 22RE purportedly so reliable and bulletproof and is this found in the newer engines?

For starters, if I remember correctly, the 22RE has a single over head can vs dual.

    What are some other differences?

I'm not deadset, but was under the impression that the older trucks were superior, anybody have any idea as to why?

I thank y'all for your time

Eventually Ford had to stop production of the Model T, it was no longer relevant. The Chinese built a line of vehicle’s for 40 years. Came in any color you wanted as long as that was revolutionary red. Even had a power take off so you can run your rice thresher. The market changes.

OP the Toyota 4 cylinder engines have been bulletproof across the board. The 3RZ (95-04) is similar to the 22RE (85-95). They both have legendary reliability. The reason you hear about the 22RE is it's so much older so it has had longer to form a reputation. The 2TR (2005+ 4 cyl) has had even less time to form a reputation but it's quickly proving that it's in the same class as it's two predecessors. The 5VZ 3.4L from 95-04 is also shaping up to be legendary, just be aware of the timing belt.

It's true that the 22RE was great but it's also true that the newer 4 cylinder engines are equally as great and NEWER which is going to be the most important factor. Go for the newest then work from there. You can't go wrong with any Toyota truck 4 cylinder from 1985 until today. Most 22REs are ragged out by this point and if not have inflated prices compared to 3RZ trucks because of the reputation.

Lastly, what are the exact differences between the 89-95 trucks vs the tacomas frames? I heard the earlier one was stronger -- does this mean it's boxed in? I have the option of getting a Tacoma or an older truck

N isn't it true that you can get a brand new 22RE motot for cheap?

    What about the single/overhead cam

I'm not aware of any significant differences in "frame strength". 89-95 pickups are super similar to the 1st gen Tacoma save for the way the front suspension is set up. You can sit in them and see they share a ton of parts.

Go to eBay and find 22RE prices.

A Farm Use truck with no bumpers and inoperable 4WD is in your budget, I think one like that is far superior to anything else because they've done so much work. That's what I've heard.

One is old. Two are newer. 3.4 is a V6. 3.4 has more horsepower. 3.4 is easy to work on: A 16 year old can watch a youtube video and do the timing belt and valve cover gaskets and fluids and brakes and paint and a radio install and anything else if he has the tools to do it.

    - Several members have posted about problems with their 22RE.

    - I think you are under that impression because you are unable to read replies two pages of members have posted for you.
