Looks nice. I like in the “benefits” section it tells you to read the manual, the first 6 pages all say warning. Also took me a long time (saw the 8th photo) to figure out the SIM card icon

I just bought one from fitcamx that looks much more low profile. I am waiting for it but from everything i've seen it looks pretty good. Probably alot cheaper than the OEM and it looks more integrated in my opinion

I know what your saying, I have a garmin mini? Hides up behind the mirror no problem. Can’t really see it from the outside unless you know what your looking for.

Someone just posted one on the fb page the other day. I have a Garmin mini that I’ll most likely replace with this as I like the factory integration. The video quality he posted looked great.

That looks nice. They say to hardwire to fuse box for parking mode. Did you do that, or can you just use the dongle on the rearview mirror?

I already worry about my car "spying" on me. I like a dash cam for my own purposes...but I am not sure I like the idea of it being integrated. Just my opinion.

I got it as part of the port installed options. If you like the OEM look, for sure it's okay. But compared to a fully decked out cloud LTE ready BlackVue, it sucks. No cloud connection, imagine when you actually need the footage at the chaotic scene of an accident, having to join WIFI and navigate through the finicky connection while maintaining proximity to download the files. Personally I'd never go back to a non-cloud dashcam

Could you just remove the SIM card and install it somewhere else to download the footage?

possibly, I haven't tried it, if the files are just non-encrypted saved on the SD card as video files then any SD card reader connected device should be able to download

I would pick an established dash cam company that comes with good support (US and CAN).

I was not able to find any details on these cams as to what sensor they're using or what they're using for the hardwire option assuming that is an option. Also, it has wifi, but I didn't see whether it specified 2.4GHz or 5GHz. It makes a big difference with transfer speed. Finally, looking at the screenshots of the app, it looks like Toyota overlay from a basic app you get from a number of the cheaper dash cam's out there.

VIOFO tends to be the most popular by volume due to its attractive price and model selection. However, there’s some QC issues they tend to have along with buggy firmware. A dashcam is not a toy IMO

Personally, I've been a fan of the Street Guardian brand for many years due to quality, firmware updates and US-based support. They're also active on the DashCamTalk forums.

Many dashcam brands are trying to be unique by offering cloud-based features using LTE with paid services to access recordings. Most of the good brands are also utilizing the latest Sony and Novatek 966670 processors and boasting 4K resolution using h.265 encoding for video files. Personally, I would not get a 4K camera using the h.265 format for two reasons. 1. the format does not have universal support/compatibility on all devices to play the files natively. 2. It's demanding, processing power-wise, to record in the h.265 format which equals more heat on a device that's stuck to your windshield.

There are other components to factor into deciding which brand to go with as well. You've got a processor, CMOS, lens, and capacitors to name a few parts that make up a dashcam. Some brands, during the manufacturing process, will use glue to secure the lens once it's focused. The problem with this is that over time when you mix the vibration of driving and heat, the glue melts and your lens is now out of focus. Some brands will use a small battery instead of using capacitors. Well, heat and batteries don't work well together for too long.

My recommendation is to go with a 2K resolution camera that is using h.264 format and 5GHz wifi. While I wait for my Tacoma to be built, I've got this sitting in my basket to purchase - https://streetguardian.cam/product/sg9667dc2k

For features and design, Blackvue is by far my favorite, but their high price point and quality issues in the past have me avoiding them. So I will continue to admire them from afar. If you're on a budget, VIOFO is probably the best choice. The issue I have with VIOFO is quality control, I think they're produced so fast with not the best QC. As long as you buy from Amazon, returns are easy and if you register your product, they extend the warranty.

my top 3 brand choices based on personal experience for quality and support.
    1. StreetGuardian
    2. VIOFO
    3. Garmin

I've been wiring dashcams for nearly a decade and have tested and toyed with VIOFO, Blackvue, Thinkware, VicoVation, and Garmin. I'm not affiliated with any dashcam brand, but I am passionate about them due to an incident I had many years ago. Insurance decided I was partially at fault because the guy that decided to make a sudden right turn from the middle lane caused me to hit him. He told a different story and there were no witnesses. I felt so wronged by it. Everyone in my family has a dashcam now lol.

The irony of this thread.... I've never felt the need for a dash cam, until today. Come home and here we are right at the top of the feed.

I am thinking of installing one each of our cars now. I am unfamiliar with how they work. What's important and what's not. I know that I want something in my daughters car that will start up on it's own and record in a looping function similar to what a security system would do.

What can I expect for a loop time before it begins to overwrite? (obviously its based on the size of the memory card but the more time the better.)

If an incident that needed to be protected from overwrite, is that something that is easy to do?

Can these be used to record while the car is parked?

I was not aware that Toyota had their own branded product.
