So I like to run oem Toyota synthetic oil and my rigs use 0w20 but I just got a second gen so when I went to the stealership and asked for 5w30 the guy tried to give me conventional oil and I told him I want synthetic so to my chagrin he comes back with a case of Mobil one and tells me Toyota doesn’t make 5w30 has this always been the case?

Toyota has never made any oil.

It's someone else's product with their label.

Mobil One is just fine, and available for a lot less that at a dealer (I'd guess)

That’s correct. Toyota doesn’t make any oil, they buy it from Exxon and rebrand it as their own.

A quick google search shows Toyota only offers 5w-30 in conventional.

So oddly enough the stealership was selling the little one quart bottles in a six pack for 9.xx a bottle Walmart sells the 5 quart for 26 dollars and I had to buy one of their one quart bottles to get 5.5 quarts and Walmart was selling their one quart bottles for 10.xx so a dollar more than the stealership

Before most Toyota models started using 0W20, Toyota-branded 5W30 did exist. Toyota likely discontinued it.

Toyota discontinued their branded Dexron III transmission fluid a couple of years ago. The dealers now stock Mobil D/M under a Toyota SKU #. I suspect that's the case with oil as well.

I highly, highly doubt Toyota adds additives

They buy oil to their specs, sure, sure

Toyota approached ExxonMobil and asked them to make a cheaper oil i.e. lower-quality base oil compensated with more additives to reach an acceptable level of performance.

That's what happens with other oil companies too. For example, Quaker State oil has almost three times as much moly as Pennzoil Platinum, even though Pennzoil Platinum is the more premium product from Shell.

Toyota owns ~32% of Aisin, Aisin being founded by Kiichiro Toyoda 75 years ago. That's why most Toyota models use Aisin transmissions and Aisin brakes (branded under Advics). ExxonMobil doesn't have this incestuous relationship with Toyota. They make Toyota motor oil because they were the lowest bidder that met Toyota's requirements.

Noticed this too. Toyota had 5W-20 and 5W-30 on clearance via their website...if you can find a dealer willing to ship.

Not an oilologist, but looking at the oil tests the oil dorks on BITOG did, Valvoline Extended Protection Full Synthetic 5W-30 or Extended Protection Full Synthetic High Mileage 5W-30 would be a similar high moly off the shelf oil that would be a very close replacement for the Toyota Genuine oils if you want to keep it close to the secret sauce additives Toyota uses.

Valvoline EP is a teensy bit cheaper per quart ($5/qt) at Walmart. Last case of 6qt TGMO I got was $36.50 shipped.

If you had the service department change your oil, it was Kendall and came out of a 50 gallon drum.

The Toyota dealer in my town has it (and other weights) on the shelves next to their parts counter, with the ATF-WS fluid, various spray cleaners and the other bric-a-brac accessories in the area. (They even have an OEM TRD Oil filter on display) :proposetoast:

FWIW: AMD/The Care Care Nut has consistently stated in his videos that Toyota branded motor oils are produced by Mobil and their synthetics are Mobil1.

Exxon makes Toyota oil and mobile oil. Mobile does not make Toyota oil.

But do agree “Toyota” 5w-30 is still readily available to purchase from most dealers.

Also makes sense why op’s specific dealer is pushing mobile. Its owned by Toyotas supplier.

"Exxon-Mobil" is/are one company. (and I believe Esso as well): Since 1998: $73.7 billion dollar merger.

Bottles of Toyota-branded "ATF-WS" automatic transmission fluid is still available at the local Toyota dealership in my town. It's sitting on the shelf with the previously mentioned 5w-30 at the parts counter. I have no doubt it may be produced for them by Mobil and don't really care. When I did my transmission fluid change, this is what re-filled it. Bottles? doubtful. Drum? Underground tank? Oil tanker in the harbor? Who cares? If my transmission blows up and a sample sent to the oil-analysis place returns a finding of "Fake".... I'll deal with it as appropriate.

[Caveat] I have no dog in this fight. It might disappear tomorrow, but it was there the other day. :pccoffee:
