Maybe these side effects are consequences of how you drive.

There's a CVT in my wife corolla. The only thing I don't like about it is when it mimics a traditional trans. I get it, some people are stupid and don't understand the superiority of a CVT over geared slush box but for christ sake can't we ignore the idiots. Sorry, but for autos it goes- Semi-Auto > CVT > Everything else.

I say no to CVT transmissions. My wife has one in her 2012 Nissan Rogue and the transmission went out at 46,000 miles. Glad it was under warranty. I was told Nissan had problems with the CVT transmissions on the Rogue. Either way, the incident left a bitter taste.

hell you don't remember the conventional transmissions that were behind the mistu 3.0 that chrysler used in everything in what the 90's? lucky if that thing made it to 50,000 miles before going. then 1500-2000 dollars later you had rebuilt junk back in the car that that didn't last either.. so its not just the CVT that has had issues over the years..

In theory the CVT transmission is a wonderful thing!
In practice, I own two. One on my road & one on my hybrid bike. I Love them & I go places.

On autos I've heard good & bad depending on the manufacturer. I haven't heard any mass failures or reliability concerns on TOYOTA, but Nissan is another issue(s).

As for me, do I want one?
Of course not, I worry about issues with what's already tried & proven, let alone headaches from a new kid on the block. IDK if I can afford new meds.

    But that's just me!

    Cheers!

I had one of those in our Dodge Stratus mated to the Mitsubishi 2.5L. I can't believe that I was too stupid to not choose the 2.0 with the MT. Thankfully, I didn't have any tranny problems, but I always used the Chrysler spec ATF which was hard to find in those early days. In the end, the PS rack popped and my Wife drove it that way for about 3mo while preggers while we searched for a replacement.

I don't know if CVTs would be able to handle towing heavy loads. Also, I had a 2012 Nissan Altima, and the CVT would whine pretty loud when it was hot out. I only had 75k miles on it before trading it in for my Tacoma. The CVT never seemed to decrease in performance, but I felt like it was on its last leg, whining like it did.

What's wrong with a transmission that selects the exact correct gear ratio for a given task? Utilizes the engine in peak torque or horsepower or given hp demand for a task. That's the problem with gears, you'll never get exactly what you need and you're almost never in it for long. These new 10 speed autos, they're all trying to mimic a CVT.

And yet, the CVTs that I drove still can't manage to do that without frustration. Just my experience.

As the technology evolves it will get better, there's no question. CAFE standards will force Toyota to adopt CVT's, or the alternative of larger multi-speed trans that will still constantly shift and of course annoy half of TW. But realistically those are your options for the future.

Yes and no for me. I agree that CAFE is pushing a lot of complexity and the results are fine for most. Some of it is really interesting like Mazda's 14:1 CR motors that run on regular fuel. And now variable CR motors. The simplicity of a CVT is neat also. Heck, we had one on a cheap lawn mower back in the 80s that ran off of an exposed belt and a couple variable pulleys. My hatred started right then. Haha!

I will drive MTs as long as I can. For the future, I've heard good things about heavy regen brake settings on EVs. It's strong enough that basically one foot driving is possible with a lot of control. That would seem to be an acceptable future for me. ATs (slushboxes, double clutch, or CVTs) just never work the way that I want them to. Basically, I like the typical sport-mode setting for getting the right gear but not the harsh shifts and seemingly over extended gear holding. That is the one big thing about CVTs, like early DCTs, they guess at a ratio for the next moment, often guess wrong, and are slower to react that I would assume they should. It is almost like they need a sliding manual lever, but even I see unwieldy problems with that idea.

At least with MTs, if I hose up a shift, which I do, I can happily blame myself not some unknown software developer that probably doesn't even drive.

Any news that CVT’s are ACTUALLY coming to the third gen Tacoma? If not then why is this a third gen topic and not off topic or general automotive?

Wrong board for sure. I can't even name a single longditudal CVT that exists outside of Subaru (the kings of CVT) We will not be seeing them on trucks anytime soon.

Also most CVT's currently have a torque limit of 250ft/lbs similar to mass produced DCT's.

I was more or less providing commentary on your statement: "I get it, some people are stupid and don't understand the superiority of a CVT over geared slush box but for christ sake can't we ignore the idiots."

Some people don't want a 10 gear auto or CVT which is why they buy used, proven, reliable vehicles that don't utilize the aforementioned options found in newer gens.

I would say I feel this is incorrect. My sister has a Camry Hybrid with a hell of a lot of torque behind it, and the CVT transmission holds great.
