I bought a 2016 Tacoma and was unaware of the current soy based wiring. So I was even more surprised when I had to pay Toyota $400 last month because mice chewed through one of my wiring harnesses. I know a I've seen an increase in incident this year as well. The link has a list of vehicles that are know to have soy based wires.

There are multiple lawsuits like this with other manufactures as well. Be interesting to see if anything at al comes from it.

As someone who works on cars professionally this is ridiculous. Pop your hood once in awhile. Its pretty obvious when you have mice going into your engine compartment, they shit and piss everywhere. Its not the manufacturers problem you live and park your vehicle where there is a rodent problem.

Are you planning to sue the rodents?

I had this same problem with my 2004 Tundra and my car insurance paid for it.

Lol. no plan to sue anyone but it did shed some light into the larger than normal incidents involving rodents chewing through wires. I've live in the PNW most of my life and never had an issue until now. I had just changed my oil the week prior and didn't see the nest on top of my intake manifold. Just started the truck up and a check engine light came on and a mouse ran out from under my truck.

Also it doesn’t matter what the wiring or sheathering is made of, if you have rats they will eat it

+1. When I bought my '54 Hallicrafters SX-88 shortwave radio (20 tubes, 94lbs.) I lifted the hood on this thing to discover rodentia of 3 types; pissings, turds, and several of those gorgeous cloth-braided wires were gnawed upon something awful. I guess they like chewing on wiring in general. Must be a thing like us with jerky or something.

Yup, we have to mall crawl our 4x4’s and never take them outside to go camping for fear of rats. Reality is rats live everywhere, even in mall parking lots and damage to our trucks by them can happen anywhere and over just one night. That’s all it took for them to be all over my engine when I was camping- one night.

Rats/mice are just assholes, they think nothing of making a mess of wires, especially in boats.I had to rewire a guy's Lund boat from the early 90s,because mice got under the console and made carnage of all the wiring.

We have raccoons and squirrels that like to tour our substations at work. Even 19,5 won't keep them away.

Be nice if one would chew through a couple wires and then they would short out while I was driving it and catch the truck on fire. Hopefully it would happen on a less traveled road so I could watch it burn to the ground.

Town I live in has allot of feral cats so my chances are slim for mice to chew on my wiring.

My Tacoma thrashed ones ass last year when I started my truck I heard a loud thud then saw fur balls the size of golf balls floating away from my truck in the light breeze. I shut my truck off and popped the hood and it crawled out under the truck and crawled it's injured ass under a nearby storage building. Once it got under the building it was moaning worse than having a tom cats pecker stuck in it. Lucky no damage to my truck. So now I take my pocket knife out and rap on the plastic fender wells before I get in my truck.
