I had just watched that earlier. This is nothing new in general, but new to the car industry.

Its the new DLC for you car. There will be push back at first, then eventually people will just be used to it and pay it. This is how life is moving, everything will be rented, or subscription based. That way companies can maintain a steady stream of revenue off things that you usually got when you paid for the car.

I would think once purchased they shouldn’t be able to go back and say oh. To keep using that service $$. I call Bull s**t
Now I wonder about the third party remote starters (N2).
next it’ll be to use FM radio it’s $.
Again adding a subscription cost to something already purchased isn’t right

I thought it was already subscription based on the 2019?+ models (when they changed the headunit). Well you get X years free then it’s service charge. Remote start from the keyfob within RF range is one thing, (Ie should be free and no service needed), but remote start over the internet is a whole different cost infrastructure, and one that’s not free to Toyota. Now why people want remote start over the internet or even want Toyota’s dumb remote 1/2 start BS is beyond me, but people seem to want those things.
    Isn’t BMWs CarPlay a monthly/yearly service charge?
What really pisses me off with Toyota and a few other manufacturers is you end up paying for the service charge of the telemetry data they want to collect your ass. At least with Jag and a few other manufacturers, they keep 2 cell connections, they pay for theirs and you pay for yours.

They are monetizing remote starting in the industry. The surface has barely been scratched in the present. Entire industries are shifting, juggling, posturing, deal making and other businesses are trying to push their way into the digital subscription services associated with the automotive industry. You want to summon your car to your presence? You will pay for the service. The sky is the limit and they are monetizing it through and through.

My 2021 did not have an RF remote start option. All I currently have is the "Toyota Connect" bs. I'm looking for an aftermarket option.

Good product, good customer service and support, easy DIY install. Manual FOB or satellite remote functionality.

Windows is also considering charging a subscription to use their OS.

Remote start will still work from your key fob but not from your phone.

You'll own nothing, that's the new model. Rent everything, lease everything. Phones, cars, homes. Go read what's in the trillion-plus spending bill about government remote vehicle shutdown being mandatory in all new vehicles starting 2026 if you really want to see the DLC future. Also, you'll probably have required breathalyzers in all vehicles at some point, because reasons.

Yeah! Anyone who's driving impaired should God damn well be able to put others in danger if they want to!

It says nothing about "government" or "remote" vehicle shutdown. The article you linked to is almost as misleading and out of context as your post. Maybe you should read what the legislation actually says.
