I admit I'm a little picky on the look/physical design of a vehicle, and these look like a Ridgeline to me.... Me no likey.

I wish they would just make a proper small truck instead of this.

Yep. I look at the old little datsuns and early 90s toyotas and wish they'd just make an actual compact pick up again.

Yes! I say bring back regular cab mini trucks. Why must the majority of todays trucks all be a crew cab?

A dozen or so years ago, Mahindra was on the verge of bringing a diesel powered compact truck to the NA market. I was eagerly awaiting. Then the whole thing crashed & burned. IIRC, the franchising fell apart. No doubt by influence from lobbyists, politicians and impending EPA mandates on diesel emissions.

Broadest appeal. A truck, even a small one, that can seat 4 more comfortably than an access cab will have much broader appeal and $ales in the market. Just got back from CO - it is overrun w/ suv Subarus! Versatility sells. I for example have zero interest in a pickup w/ less than 4 doors. Zero. Too limiting.

This would be a very cool little truck to have.

I hope Toyota does come out with something to compete against the Maverick and Santa Cruz. I don't know much about the Santa Cruz but I think the Maverick is a winner with what it offers. Unfortunately it is a Ford product and I will pass on buying one for that reason. I don't see many Mavericks in my area which is rural but I saw quite a few while driving around in Cleveland. I heard they have a 8 month waiting period for them here.
Some one mentioned building small pick ups again. To this day I miss my 86 Mazda B2200 short bed regular cab. I loved that truck and drove it until 2002 when it wouldn't pass our echeck here anymore. One of my coworkers bought it and drove it for another year before it gave up the ghost because he lived just outside of the echeck zone. I like my Tacoma and wont part with it but I really would have preferred something smaller.

Drove my 86 B2000 a 100 miles a day until 5 years ago.....until it was crunched up in an accident. Had 375k on it at that point. Still have it, and dream of rebuilding it some day.

Cannot disagree with what you are saying. I understand about appeal, what sells, multi-use platform, CAFE standards, crash safety, etc.

I like and enjoy my Taco. But truth be told, I prefer a basic utilitarian vehicle with AC and decent tunes for daily use. Unfortunately they just don't make them like that anymore.

Dad picked up a used mid-80s Mazda extended cab 4X2 that became the beater for ranch errands into the 2010s (extended cab) so the border collie (they know more than we do and if they had opposable thumbs would be driving) could relinquish the front seat when I rode along. My last trip with Dad in 2021, was to fill 5 gallon jugs with non-tax diesel for the ranch tractors at the Town Pump. On the way home, we were nearing the next to last turn for home, when the right rear tire (my side) felt like it dropped off the shoulder. That didn't happen; it went flat. Limped in to the machine shed, offloaded all the jugs, plugged in the old compressor and that tire popped its bead back on the rim. "I have no idea how old those tires are..." My sister called a week later to let me know that Les Schwab came up with a tire to mount on that rim. He passed on a year later and that truck still sat under the tall ponderosa pines, where it provided a place for Dad's feeding local California quail as the deer and magpies couldn't get under that truck. He'd often say, "If you find something good, you'd better buy half a dozen because they'll quit making them."
I wish I could buy a new Toyota truck like my first new vehicle, a dark blue (pearl?) 4x2 22R 5 speed manual Longbed Deluxe (with its good AM/FM/cassette stereo). Light enough, a come-along cable puller was all we needed for a winch.

with a price starting at $20K, even the Stout looks good, and I'd accept that on a new 84/24 Longbed Deluxe ...

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Ford stopped making two door cars because they weren't selling. Then they stopped four door cars (including the Taurus Police Interceptor - the segment leader) because they weren't selling enough to cover the production costs. Then they expanded the SUV's because people wanted the versatility they offer.

I only want a compact truck if it's a regular cab BOF. There are plenty of 4dr vehicles out there to chose from heck I'd just get a 2dr Bronco and give up the bed if size is what is driving my purchase.

It's odd that Ford discontinued the Taurus Interceptor and kept the Fusion in production for a few more years. Ford just wanted to sell Taurus customers the Explorer. Biggest complaint from PPV customers of the Explorer is interior space, which had to be worse in the Taurus. Fusion had less interior space than the Taurus, but those are far less popular with PPV customers. Ford still offers Expedition, Expedition Max, and F-150 including Lightning for PPV customers who want more interior space than what Explorer offers.

Ford stopped production in 2018-19 of all sedans, Taurus to the Fiesta, to focus on the more profitable truck and SUV market. Sales were falling in the "sedan" segment and growing in the SUV market. The trucks have always been strong sellers and highly profitable. It was a money decision. The Explorer is an SUV.

Ford Fusion Police Responder was in production until 2020. Taurus Interceptor was discontinued in 2018. 2019 was the last year for the redesign 1st gen Explorer Interceptor. The current Explorer Interceptor 20-23 is slated for 2024 refresh.
