I'm at the point where I need new tires again and am trying to decide between the Open Country's and the Wildpeaks. I currently have a set of the wildpeaks on my truck and they have been pretty good over the life of the tire but when I bought them they were significantly less expensive than most of the competition.

It seems like the Open Country's are pretty comparable to the Wildpeaks but I am having trouble finding any posts about the Wildpeaks in the last year or so.

I'm located in SW Colorado and do a lot of highway, dirt/fire roads, and get into mud often enough. While I have a dedicated set of snow tires, snow performance is still important to me.

Should I stick with the Wildpeaks even with the increase in price over the last few years or should I give the Open Country's a shot?

Either would be fine for you. Get whatever is cheaper and don’t overthink it.

I currently own both. Falken at3w 285/70r17 on my FJ cruiser with about 25k miles on them. And recently put Toyo ATIII 35/11.5R17 on my Tacoma. The toyos are too new to give an honest opinion . However, the falkens have been a fantastic tire. I would've gotten them for my Tacoma if they offered 35 x 11.5.

All signs point to them being very similar in terms of performance. I LOVED my Wildpeaks but have heard nothing but good about the Toyo's. I'd just buy whichever was cheaper.

I’ve had both, and I think I got super unlucky but my Falkens were terrible. I’ve now bought 3 sets of Toyos. 2 for truck, 1 for Jeep. Only 2 for truck because I upsized, not because they wore out fast. Falkens did not balance right at all, and all of the Toyos balanced unbelievably smoothly first try.

Thanks everyone! From reading on tire rack and a few other spots they seem pretty similar. Since I hadn't seen any posts on the Wildpeaks in the last couple years I wanted to check if there was anything to look out for. Overall I have been pretty satisfied with my wildpeaks but with that said I'll probably go with which ever is in stock/cheapest.

Toyo AT3's;I love mine. Wild peaks have balancing issues from what I've read.

My falkens have done well on rock, sand, and offroading, but I had to re-balance them recently. I'd probably buy the Toyos given the rebalance issue.

@Taco*Sauce06 I would agree with @MGMDesertTaco if you are splitting hairs to make a decision, there has been some concern for how the Falken's balance out and how the Toyo's have no issues. What's cheaper may not mean what's better. Have you checked price yet?

Thanks again everyone! I ended up going with the Toyo's. Everything in my area ended up only being a few dollars difference for the set overall. While I had an overall great experience with the wildpeaks the balancing issue does kind of concern me. I kind of suspect that might be from how aggressive the sidewall tread is, even though that's one of the things I find most visually appealing about the tires lol. I'll be going on a small road trip this weekend with the possibility to get offroad and into some snow drifts on the trial if I do. It'll be a good test for the new tires.

4-5 years ago there was a bad batch of Falken’s that were almost impossible to balance . I have owned 3 sets and love them ,no problems.

Mine were installed in March 2021. I don’t remember the date code but it wasn’t that long before then. But, balancing was only one aspect I didn’t like. Mine rode much stiffer than other tires despite being SL 115T, and they were also much heavier than other same-size tires. They made a very uncomfortable scrubbing feel (against the pacement) felt in the steering on turns. The only benefits of those tires in my experience was the good wet traction. I think the success of wildpeaks depends a lot on what size you choose, what load rating, and where they come from (which depends on size and load rating). People with LTs seem to have much better luck than the garbage SLs I had.

Mine were a bitch to balance and dry rotted within 2 years of buying them. Their Dot code was 2021.

Unfortunately I had major issues with my new falken wildpeaks installed a few weeks ago. Major vibes from 50-65 mph, so much that I started wondering if they were even safe to drive. Discount tire balanced them 3 times and road forced them. Road force was good (worst was 18) but the vibes were still extreme once you hit 50mph. One of the tires or more had to be out of round or defective. Since I was still within 30 days of purchase, thankfully discount tire returned them with no problem at all. They just strapped on some Toyo at3 tires and all vibe issues were instantly removed! Nice to drive my truck again without being beat to death. Major shout out to Discount Tire

Definitely. I am loving the toyos. I’ve never had an issue like that with new tires before. The falkens have great reviews and look awesome but my experience was not good at all.
