so im moving from RI to CO. i have a 15ft toy hauler 3300lb dry. i was going to rent a 20ft box truck to move out there. i know they dont have 7pin e brake connector. is it bad to tow it without the brake controller/ebrakes hooked up? it could save me $1700 by not shipping the toy hauler. need opinion of people who know more about towing than i do.

    Thanks

I wouldn't want tow through Colorado without brakes (at least if you are going over the passes).

how's your truck getting out there? why not just pull the trailer with that and have someone else drive the uhaul?

I wouldn’t do it. Worst case you wreck and you’re on the hook for everything because the uhaul insurance won’t cover anything if you’re towing something they didn’t authorize.

You might be able to rent a flatbed uhaul car hauler and winch the toy hauler trailer up on it.

I'm just a random shmo on the web, but: I'm under the impression there are state laws that stipulate how much weight you can legally tow without trailer brakes. Then you also have the limits of the tow vehicle itself, which uhaul might be able to tell you or you can look them up? If it doesn't have a 7pin though I would be surprised if the tow rating is high enough for 3300+toys lbs.

I'd recon it is pretty bad to improperly tow and wouldn't do it myself. Not to mention if you f*%k up and crash and hurt yourself or other people because you wanted to save $1700... you'll be more liable than usual.

You might be able to make a prodigy rf work. Just need to find away to power the trailer side.

If I'm remembering correct, U-Haul's tow ratings are based on the trailer having surge brakes

Good point I totally forgot about those, thanks for the reminder! Tacoworld needs a feature to disable morning posting until after you have caffeine.

    Ha! No worries.

For the price of shipping the trailer and hotels I'd be picking up a wireless brake controller, 7 pin truck side connector and Scotch-locking the hell out of the U-haul truck wiring to make the brakes on the trailer work.

Ok so another question. I'm having it shipped with tacoma and trailer attached on flatbed.. Do I leave the WDH attached.
