Hey guys, I am just wondering if anyone here frequently tows with 285/75/16's or 255/85/16's at elevation 5280ft and above. Living in CO, I pull my ~3800lb boat and trailer up the mountain passes all summer long. I am currently running 265/75/16's which is obviously about a 32 inch tire, and I don't have experience with this size yet either (I just bought the truck, to replace my 1st gen). Just wondering if anyone has experience and how drastic the difference is between 32's and 33's.

06 DCSB TRD OR Auto currently stock but looking to lift 2.5-3in if it matters... Thanks!

A little snow shot from today!

Eh nevermind. I just found this in another thread... and it makes sense, just wondered how much it would all hurt me. Probably worth sticking with the 265/75's.

I can give you a little insight, while not at the elevation you're looking for I tow a 2004 Air Nautique 210 with my 4Runner (4.0L V6) and have taken it up into the mountains a few times. Running 2.5" of lift and a tall 32" I will say that I knew it was back there but i had no trouble towing it.

Will the truck do it, and be fine on 33s? Sure. But it's definitely going to feel sluggish and you're going to be basically flooring it in 3rd gear on every hill. If you do a lot of towing, I'd stick with the 32s.

same experience as above, you know its there, but no issues towing my watercraft, I know I cant expect to pass someone while climbing up my pass to hit the lake but I have no issue with keeping speed or getting it when I needed it while towing.

I'm only at 3000', but notice a big difference towing with load E 33s. I do often tow my camper above the altitude mentioned in the OP. When I do my lockers, I'm regearing to 4.10 to get back to stock power and MPGs.

    I pull 5200lbs at a max of 2200feet on 285/75's and it loves it. (07 4.0L with 225k)

Thank you for the replies everyone. I'm just trying to find the balance of being able to wheel to my favorite remote spots and also be able to tow this boat without hating life or killing the truck. I'm sure it's been covered, but how much advantage is there for off road with 33's over 32's? It is really going to make or break me?

Old pic. Wind the motor up and she'll move. (all pro expe. springs + fox shocks make it beyond enjoyable to tow anything within our tow range.)

Very nice setup! I now have upgraded suspension that should work great, I just know that this truck is down at least 35+ HP at Denver's elevation and by the time I pull it up over passes at 11K feet, I can see easily a 75 HP loss. Add in big 33's and a lift and I'll definitely be chugging along. My 1st gen 5spd did it, but was at high RPM for extended periods of time. I think I was able to maintain 55mph full out in 3rd gear while climbing. So, as much as I really want 33's under the truck, I think 32's are the better option :/
