I'm wanting to rent a skid steer to get a project done at my house. The only available skid steer says it weighs 6,000 pounds combined (equipment + trailer). I have a 2020 TRD Sport 4x4 w/ towing package. The store is about 30 minutes away, so basically I'd be towing it for an hour total. Roads are mostly flat only having a few uphill grades. Should I go for it or bad idea? Thanks!

Rent a truck to tow it.

I'll give the 'it depends' answer that I bet you'll hear a bunch of times. If you have lots of experience towing trailers, have already installed a trailer brake and know how to set it up and use it, and won't need to go fast--- you'll be okay. If none of that's true, I'd rent a truck to pull it.

Did you check if they would even let you take it with a smaller truck?

Around here, most rental companies will not allow 1/2’s tons or smaller pull skid steers.

Usually rental companies decide if you can pull it or not for liability reasons.

Yes, but no... Do you have a brake controller? Have you towed a heavy load or have experience with that? Terrain?

These truck are rated to 6800*, but towing just ~3500lbs is VERY noticeable and changes everything in these little trucks. If I did that often, I would have a Tundra, which will be my next truck.

I highly doubt they’ll let you, many places won’t even with a half ton. When my buddy built his deck and pool, he had to find a small lot that would let him use his Tundra, because the other lots mandated a one ton or larger.
Regardless if they will- it’s a horrible idea.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
That is a small skid steer but just rent the half ton from Home Depot with it. It will probably save you piece of mind and a headache.

    It can probably pull it.

The question is can it stop it?

Yes, but still too big for a Taco. Here's a snip from a home depot website that has a pic of it.

I actually read the article that went with the picture. It went viral because everyone though they were being cruel. The authorities investigated it and found out the animal had a broken hip and couldn't stand so transporting the cow that way was the most humane method. The cow was transported to a private farm where it was immediately slaughtered on arrival. No laws were broken, although just about everyone agreed that stopping at a gas station and putting the cow on display for all to see was probably not the best idea.

I took no offense to it.

I've done similar with cows that had broken legs.

One interesting thing I learned was that if the cow had been transported to a commercial slaughterhouse it would have been illegal. Commercial slaughterhouses can't accept animals unless they are able to walk in on their own. Who knew?

When I had my Tundra, only one rental place would let me tow the smallest skid steer. Only reasons were:

    -trailer was 14k rated
