I just got this 2017 Tacoma. It does not look like it's set up to just install a 1 7/8 inch ball for Towing. Do you have to drill the holes? Anybody know how to do this without installing a hitch? Thanks

Did your truck come with the tow package?

I genuinely can't tell if some of the threads here are real, sometimes.

You typically need a trailer hitch to use a trailer ball. lol

On my 2012 I just popped off the cap and placed my ball right there on the bumper. That's all I am trying to do. I am pulling less than a thousand pounds occasionally so I don't want to go with a full trailer hitch kit if I can help it. I own a base model SR 2wd with the four-cylinder engine. Trying to keep it simple.

That isn't an option on the third gen.

Even if you're only towing very light loads, bumpers should never be used for towing with a ball. They aren't testing for towing and stability like a tow hitch. Since you're now in a 3rd gen, this isn't an issue anymore.

Lol. People have been bumper towing with a ball for a long time. If you are being reasonable, it's not a big deal.... I would ensure that safety chains are used.
