I was rear ended. Wanted to see opinions on if you beleive it is repairable or if insurance is most likely going to say totaled. It's a 09 Tacoma. 20240911_112405.jpg 20240911_201451.jpg 20240911_112426.jpg

09? Totaled. 15 year old truck and needs a new frame.

Looks like it was in very nice shape.

Hopefully everyone was ok. Doesn’t look to bad, seems fixable. Let it go through the insurance/ inspection process and see what happens.

My ‘09 had similar damage and insurance fixed it. YMMV…..

I have an 08 DC Sport 4x4 and was rear ended by a kid in a Yukon in 2010 and pushed into the car in front of me. I had significant damage in both the front and rear that ended up costing $22K, and they had my truck for 3 months. My frame was bent so bad that it literlly broke the conposite bed. It was literally disassembled from the top down to the frame and rebuilt. I got a new frame along with a long list of parts that included a new composite bed, all new sheet metal bed parts, etc. It was not totalled at the time because the trucks street value was still higher than the repair cost.

My understanding about the frames for our trucks is they are "hydroformed", and because of that process, I've been told by a well respected body shop in my areas that those type of frames are NOT suppossed to be cut and a new frame piece spliced in to repair it. The only correct way to repair it is to replace it.

Given the age of your tuck, they will probably total it. You may be able to find a local shop that would be willing to cut out the damage and weld in a new section though.

Not looking good due to the value amount of repair

I’d buy it back and straighten it out “ok” and just never tow with it

    Sorry

As long as all the damages is behind the rear spring perch I would have no problem getting it fixed. How does the cab and box line up?

Totaled. The damage itself can be repaired, but the cost of the repairs + the value of the salvage will be more than the value of the truck.

is the frame in the area where it collapsed a C-channel, or is it a completely closed box? If it's the latter, the frame is junk for sure.

Thank you everyone for the input. We will see when it goes in for the estimate what they decide to do this week. I will post an update when I know.

Frame replacement per my dealer is $20k period. Lots of labor. Frame is about 3-4k the rest is labor.
    Good luck.

UPDATE: Thank you all again. The shop did not go into a full estimate due to the frame damage alone. The shop advised it is a total loss and I also received an email from insurance today who after photo submission are also counting it as a total loss. We will be discussing ACV in the next few days. Wish me luck.

Yup. Ask what they’ll pay if you keep it. Before you agree to that, ask a frame shop for an estimate.

man, I hate dealing with this stuff. 90% of the time it’s stupid driving.

I've bought and repaired two totaled Tacos with similar damage. Easy, easy, easy repairs done in my driveway in a few hours. If you lived close to me I'd be tempted to make you an offer so it doesn't go through the auction and we would both be financially better off.
    How many miles on it?

Snarl. Infuriates me. I hope she was cited for it..and IMO I'd push for more penalties. Sorry for the vent but my wife was severely injured recently by someone on their phone and it sucks. Fortunately you are okay OP

Been a long while but I went to many auctions that were open to the public and man I have some stories. One I remember well was a 10 yr old Chevy Citation, basic vehicle and little else, that was a police auction where you don't know if they start/run/etc. I figured I'd roll the dice around $200 since it had decent tires and a few other parts I could at least get some money back out of. Bidding starts at $100 and I'm in it, dropping at around $250. 2 people for some reason wanted it so badly, $10 at a time, up to $700..which you could buy one of those all day from a private party for. At least in the latter case you can test drive it. WTF.

Yup... and then there is the opposite experience where people pick up sweet deals because they are patient and know when and how to bid. Newbies often go in with the idea that every deal they bid on has to be something they can steal and they often don't see the value that a more experienced bidder will see... and when they get outbid they get bitter and quit after failing to buy as they bid on only one vehicle. Of course there is the opposite experience when two newbies get into a bidding war and don't know when to quit. I'm happy with the vehicles I've sold through auctions and I'm happy with what I've paid for the ones I bought. Made money on all of it... but then I know how to work an auction.
