Just noticed a bunch of grease all around my inner cv boot area. Have been off road for a while, like a year.
5100's with 886 springs. Only recent changes were new wheels and rear leafs.
Tear is around the smallest most outer ring. Truck is a 2015 and has 60k miles.
Does this seem strange? Was a fair amount of grease considering how small the tear appears to be. How quickly do I need to get it fixed. IMG_20220728_141407564~2.jpg

Not strange at all. we blew over 12 within 3 rigs in 4 days. All the grease will sling out and make a mess but I've put over 20k on a blown cv boot. I would add grease when I remembered

Those boot fins are pressed up against one another, the CV axles spin all the time even in 2wd. So if the fins are touching then they will eventually rub and tear. Essentially you have too much lift for the CV boots to handle. Either lower the lift a tad or look into something like the boot slide mod

leaking CV boots aren't an urgent matter but it will just get messier and messier. Eventually without grease in the boots the CV axle itself will become compromised and could fail, especially if the tear gets big enough to let in water/dirt/debris

mines so small I wasn't even sure if it was a tear or just cracking in the boot.

Just drive it. I drove over 40K miles on a blown out boot on my 4runner. When it started to make a clicking noise, I eventually replaced it.

If you’re able to do the work yourself, replacing the boot is far less expensive than replacing the whole axle assembly. Last I heard, there’s a national back order on OEM cvs so getting a factory replacement might not be easy. Unless you’re ok with a generic parts store replacement, then it shouldn’t be an issue. But what I’m getting at is the longer you wait to repair it, the more expensive it could potentially become.

I like to think I'm fairly mechanical. Install and fix everything on my own. So I feel I'm capable of doing the job. The GA heat just sucks working outside in the summer. But I guess its just the way it is. I don't want to replace the whole axle over a single boot. So I'll order the boot kit. OEM boot kit, or is there a better one?

At that price I would buy a new CV from oreillys. People swear by factory but my buddy ordered new OEM and broke both the same day.
