I'm looking for a topper that is well built, weatherproof and strong for overland travel. I will eventually use a rooftop tent (RTT) with it.

Also, are there any toppers that are built to keep the rear window open while driving? Many times, I will want to hang some mountain bikes over the tailgate.

    Thanks very much!

I have a leer 100rcc. It’s a contractor cap, but it’s very well built. Has side access doors, and can come with a reinforced roof to make it extra rugged.

As far as the back window being open while driving, I don’t know of any. I’ve had mine tied so it’s halfway open, but not just flailing about.

Not the best pic, but it shows the doors. I like that they’re not glass. A bit more secure and and I like the color matched look. And helps with prying eyes looking at my shit.

So not sure if you've ever looked into softoppers but I'm running one with my setup. I built a rack that goes over the top so I can run my rtt as well. It is weatherproof for the most part. I run a bed mat too and I've never had anything get wet. The rear window does come off so you can run your bikes as well. I know @Mobtown Offroad is making a over the softopper rack that will be released very soon if you don't have the ability to do custom.

I've driven with my rear window open a couple of times when I had lumber or deer stands sticking out the back. As long as your gas struts are in good shape it's no big deal but it'll probably wear them out quicker; they're a wear item and usually need replacing every so often anyways.

I'd love to have one of those tradesman shells. Several people on ExPo use the ARE DCU shells although I've read some complaints about the welds when they're flexed a lot off-road. As much as I like the looks of the soft caps there is no way I'd own one, every wannabe punk here would slice it open just to see what you had in the back. It's simple to snatch the rear window on a shell open too but luckily most folks don't seem to mess with them, especially if they can see there's nothing back there worth messing with.

Anyone ever hear of someone actually ripping into a soft cap? If they want to see what was inside, they would look thru the windows. Just like they would with a hard top. And then if they want in, they will unsnap it and get in, rather than vandalizing the top.

I'm sure it's about as common as someone cutting into a jeep soft top, however common that is. You give thieves too much credit though. They're not going to be thinking that they can just open it up or peer inside most likely.

It's heavy as F&&* but I only paid $480 For it so I'm not complaining. Got it second hand and for the price it was a no brainer. Plan on adding OME pack in the rear anyways, but it's fine for now. Pic attached with the bike carrier is 355lb tongue weight, 500lb cap and about 250lb camping gear in the bed prob 300lb in the cab with me and the passenger.
