You ever notice this decal on the pump. If you don't see it it is not Top Tier. Yeah I'm beginning to feel the same way. Buddy don't bother putting Top Tier gas in his new 40 some thousand dollar Tundy.

True. Different vendors have different (or more of, less of) additives. In the past I think it made more of a difference, but perhaps less so now. I usually use Chevron, but Costco is usually running $.30-.40 per gallon cheaper here; I use it probably 25% of the time.
I figure $150-200 per year to put Chevron in is more than worth it, but I’ve really noticed no difference between Chevron and Costco.
Also, use BG44K about every 3K-5K miles….that stuff is awesome and makes a noticeable difference. Expensive but I feel like it’s worth it.

Yeah I hear you on the BP. Mach 1 use to be BP here where I live. Mach 1 sells Marathon gas. I asked the manager why no "Top Tier" decals on the pumps like when it was BP. He said he hasn't had the time to put them on the pumps yet. I took him at his word but 18 months later he still has not found the time to put the decals on the pumps. This morning I decided to not let it worry me about Top Tier gas and went and am going to continue buying my gas at Loves. (Which is not Top Tier gas)

Haha look at that, I had no clue! My post should have included a YMMV at the end, but yeah I'm not interested in driving from pump to pump for some snake oil fuel additives. This Toyota engine cleans itself and monitors everything, save your money for something tangible. When in doubt, think of how many 300k mile Tacomas are out there whose drivers never thought twice about their gas, and never heard of this forum either...

    YMMV!

Most likely just the difference between the way octane is used outside the US. My bikes all said 95 in the manual as well, but the pump equivalent is 91.

Maybe Californias stricter formula has something to do with it? I've just never had problems with it, however back in the 80's ARCO was notorious for carbon build up

So should we segue into whether to use 91 or 87? :)

I used to buy Costco all the time but there are so many cheap bastards like me here that I can hardly ever get into the queue for gas, unless I make a special trip before store hours, which defeats the purpose of saving money on gas as I'd burn at least a gallon of gas there and back....

I almost always fill up at the same Philips 66 station near work. I read an article about Top Tier gas a few years ago when I had my previous vehicle, and I remember worrying "Oh no, what if that Philips 66 isn't Top Tier??"
I went out of my way to get Shell a few times, but eventually went back to Philips and noticed their pumps had the Top Tier sticker too. Now I usually look at pumps out of curiosity whenever I fill up at a different station while traveling or what-not, and it seems like more have the Top Tier sticker than do not.
So I don't worry about it anymore. At least 75-80% of my fill-ups are Top Tier whether I want it or not.

I may start putting a can in my tank once a year. Can't hurt anything I suppose.

My 2.7 4 cylinder don't clean itself. But I'm to the point I am not going to lose sleep over not buying Top Tier gas. ;)

Whatever floats your boat. I asked the same question on Facebooks Tacoma World group and I don't think 80% of them know what "Top Tier" fuel is. lol They are posting what octane they use.

A valid point followed by another good point!

Another thing I tell myself is "this is 19th century tech... this is 19th century tech..." over and over haha. It might be more refined (pun intended) but it's still... 19th century tech.

Probably about as much as pouring a bottle of HEET in my tank twice a year.

If I see it happening I don't go to that one. If I don't see it then I don't know when they did it.

There does seem to be a lot of confusion/misunderstanding thinking that Top Tier is related to octane when it's actually about the detergent additives.

Yes, if they are filling the tanks I don't go there. I live in the middle of a city. Theres gas stations and Starbucks on every corner
