Too far gone to repair paint on roof?

I have an 07 TRD sport and was wondering if there are any ways to repair or make this at least any better than it is now. Should I just let nature take its course? Any advice helps! Thank you!

I've seen worse on a 15 year old truck. Where it is located is not something easily visible for anyone other than big rig drivers. I'd leave it as is until you are ready to repaint the entire truck. The "Patina" look on older vehicles is popular now. My 07 had some pretty serious peeling along the front edge of the hood. I masked it off and repainted the 1st 8" or so of my hood using white Flex Seal paint.

It doesn't match perfectly and I didn't try. I almost painted it black so it wouldn't look like I was trying to match colors. The Flex Seal paint has a textured look to it which makes it stand out even though it is the same color. Mine was a lot worse than your truck. I didn't want to spend $4000+ to have the whole truck painted at this time. Maybe in another 5-6 years.

My brother has a blue 2006 Tundra that is doing the same on the top of the cab. He isn't going to do anything until it gets a lot worse.

That can be easily fixed with 2-3 cans of base coat and a can or two of SPRAYMAX 2K clear. Since it’s the roof, doesn’t have to be perfect.

    All this using spray cans.

My '09 is white and has many small and few good sized chips on the very front of the hood. I'm trying to think about how I can "not expensively" sand those out smooth enough to paint, probably about 8" of the entire front (side to side) of the hood. I just don't see an expensive full body paint job in its (or mine...) future, which would look great though...maybe some kind of personalized flame pattern, ha!

You can easily blended it in, no need to repaint the whole hood.

    This the guide I used.

Personally, this is what I would do, since it’s such a big panel I would get an orbital sander. Keep in mind, I’m not a professional at all. :)

    - sand 320-400 grit sandpaper
    - Primer, 2-3 coats…start light.
    - Wetsand the primer with a block sander 600-800 grit
    - 2-3 coats of base coat
    - 2-3 coats of 2K clear

This is optional, once it’s cured, you could wetsand it with 2000 grit, use an orbital buffer with a cutting pad and a rubbing compound for a flawless finish.

The results are without wetsanding, just used an orbital buffer with a cutting pad using Meguiars Rubbing Compound.

In my opinion blemishes add patina to your rig .

Go to a vinyl wrap place and have the roof wrapped in the color of your choice (even a carbon fiber pattern if you want). It'll give protection off road from tree branches as well. Roof is a relatively simple shape, so it shouldn't be expensive (relative to repainting).

You really should put together a step by step guide and get the mods to sticky the thread, and then give us updates periodically if it lasts

I like both the paint and vinyl wrap options mentioned.

I have a vinyl wrap on my roof and hood more for protection, but it pretty much stops any progression of fading in its tracks. I did the roof and hood myself and not hard to do if you have the motivation.
Silver is also an easy color to match. You won't find an exact color match, but for the roof, absolutely no one is going to notice. But anyway, you have options.

Gives you guys and girls an idea how much I had to paint to blend in with the OEM paint.

The roof of my 09 Speedway Blue is having the same problem. I don't recall if this color is a one-coat or if there is a clearcoat.

I had thought of having just the section between the rubber roof seals sanded and repainted. Now you have me thinking of a flat black vinyl roof. Hmm...

My 08 Sport is also Speedway Blue. It is definitely a base coat/clearcoat paint. Sadly, my roof is also beginning to look like the one the OP is showing.

My 2008 SWB Tacoma's roof and hood look like crap. Pretty clear Toyota dropped the ball on the paint in that era.

Not so sure.... I will admit over the years I've not paid as much attention with waxing/sealants to the roof area as I do the rest of the painted surfaces, so I'm sure some of this is on me.

OP, if that's just clear coat peeling, you can lightly sand it off and just spray the whole top with high quality clear like what TegoTaco used in his post. Like he stated, doesn't have to be perfect but likely be much better than its current condition. I plan on spot repairing the clear issues on my '08 JKR using this method but using the clear coat paint that TegoTaco used.
