    Hello,

Looking for a cheaper tonneau cover ($300 or less) but have a couple questions:

    1) Seems I have read the roll up ones and even the OEM are not fully weather proof. Anyone have experience with this?

    2) When installing, can I keep and continue to use the factory rails inside the bed that lock the cargo hooks? I don’t want to remove one to install the other as I don’t expect to keep the tonneau cover on all the time.

Was looking at the roll up style so i can still have access to the bed if not in use but also easy to store (less space) in garage.

    Here is an example:

My Lund Genesis Elite, soft trifold is completely waterproof. And, it meets the criteria stated in the OP.

    1. very few, if any, are fully weatherproof. if there's any sort of seal or weather stripping, water will find a way, even if it's just a bit. that's what water does.

    2. yes, many tonneaus use the toyota rails attach the mounting hardware and some require you to relocate the rail slightly to accommodate the mounting hardware. don't worry about this.

I have a north mountain roll up cover, about $150ish off Amazon, still have use of the bed rails and yeah it’s about 99% weatherproof but the leak is minimal only during storms.

Thank is for the replies. I was comparing the Lund with the Truxedo and best I could tell I liked the Lund better but there were quite a few to choose from that I didn’t see ... that North Mountain one is half the price of the Lund. Bummer. Ha!

The beauty of the Lund trifold (and perhaps other trifolds) is that the only thing you need to “install” on the truck are four nicely milled clamp chocks that slide right into the bed’s side tracks. So, when you take the cover off to haul stuff there is no Velcro, rails, tracks, etc. remaining to collect dirt, get damaged, etc.

Oh I totally missed that you had a Trifold. I did like the feature you mentioned but decided on the roll up instead. I may regret it but it is my first time buying one of these and I liked the ability to roll the cover all the way up to the cab.

    Understood. Lots to consider.
I have been pleasantly surprised how easy is it to remove and reinstall the trifold. The initial installation took some time, like most new experiences. Now, I take the trifold off/on in about a minute.
I don’t think you can go wrong with either a roll up or folding tonneau. So many good products out there, custom fit to our awesome Tacomas.

I love my Rugged Cover Tri Fold hard tonneau covert. Just four clamps for installation. 5 minutes on 5 minutes off. Can stand on it. Take it off and on all the time. I’d say it keeps most of the rain out.

I had a roll up previously that mounts using the factory bed rails so allows for the use of them. It was not totally waterproof but pretty good. A bed mat may also help with stuff sitting in water (though I just recently got one)
