Tires/Size for 18" Monster XD?

I'm a newbie on this forum and after reading some threads, I was hoping to get some "Tacoma Knowledge" assistance on my Tacoma.

I am looking to purchase 18" Monster XD for my 2006 Tacoma (Ext Cab/4 door).

The dilemma is which tire to get? I want to go the biggest all terrain tires as much as possible with minimal rubbing or any mods. (But don't mind removing my mud flaps). Currently have 3" spacer lift and running TRD wheels with BFG 275/70/17


Here are more specs of what I looking at:
Use: mostly street; snow/ice about 3-5 times a yr; (no off road)
Appearance: Only want the tires/wheels to stick out 1-1.5 outside the fenders (at most)
Tire of choice: Nitto Terra Grappler or Duratracs or maybe ProComps?
(I want All Terrain)
***I like the Nitto Trail Grappler, but I don't think it would be sufficient for my use; No BFG.

My tire shop recommended: NTG 275/65/18 (or "32's)
- I kinda of saw some other Tacomas on TW with Monster XD on 33's....anyone w/ issues???
- Anyone with photos?

I feel your pain. I'm a newbie as well and trying to pick the right tire size.

Is there a reason you are going to the 18" wheel?
I'm considering that as well just because I'm considering the 275-70-18 which is a true 33" tire. I want to run 33"s but I'm not a fan of 285s. But I'm not sure if I can clear the 275 70 18 because they are actually 33.4" tall.

 

I am in the same boat as you are. Been lusting after these wheels but didnt really know what tire to go with. Like you, love the trail grapplers, but an AT would probably better suit my needs. After a lot of searching through these forums, this is what I have come up with. The brand of the tire somewhat depends on what size you want to go with. I am no expert and I may stand to be corrected, but again, this is just what I have found.

The smallest Trail Grappler you can get is 285-65-18. This basically goes for most MT's as well. Since you have a 3" lift you can fit these with some work (trimming and maybe even a chop).

Terra Grapplers come in lots of different sizes and give you more options. Again, you could fit 285-65-18. Another option that I have found is the 285-60-18. This tire is the same width, but is 1" shorter. Some have even had this exact setup and been able to run on stock suspension, so you should be fine at 3" of lift. You can also get this size in several different AT's: BFG, Falken, Toyo, etc. However, I have yet to find an MT in this size.

275-65-18's should fit fine as well. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I'm planning to get the XD Monster's. The smallest they come in is 18". I would prefer 17"s but they don't make it....so I'm SOL.

I want to go with Nitto Trail Grappler's, but the only size that seems to work are the 285/65/18 and they are little under 33's (which are fine with me). But I have seen mixed reviews on the NTG 285/65/18 on TW adn how they fir etc.... And I'm not too much of a fan of how the 285's stick out so much.

So I ended up with going with the Nitto Trail Grapplers 285/65/18.....and I can say....I am truly happy I did!

Feedback:
- One beefy ass/aggressive looking tire. (Made my TACO feel like a "REAL" TRUCK!)
- Tires rubbed the front fender at first, had to trim some of the fender and plastic inner wall cover to clear the tire on full turns. Especially when backing up with full turn.
- Mileage: sucks....I lost about 25-40 miles off a full tank from my previous tires (BFG AT) But the tire tread is thick....so the tire will/should last me much longer than Nitto Terra Grapplers. They do feel a lil heavier and ride a lil slower due to the thick tread.
- Handling: They do tend to wobble around on the street, but nothing that bothers me. They feel and grip the street well. Rain - it performed pretty well, but its not like I drive super fast in the rain anyways. I haven't got a chance to try them in the snow, dirt or mud yet....TBA.
- Noise: They do "whistle" a little louder than my previous BFG AT's, but are pretty quiet for a M/T tire.

Overall, truly happy I went with these tires. I would recommend them if mileage and noise aren't a factor...

 

i just bought this same exact setup but havnt put them on my truck yet. Getting the 3in lift in on monday. I actually ordered the terra grapplers but they sent the the trail grapplers. not complaining since they are almost 40 more a tire. can you post some pictures so i can see how it looks?

Keep in mind for your milage, that:
1. Heavier tire = less MPG
2. Larger tire diameter = inaccurate odometer. You're actually traveling farther then your odo says.
