Bought my son an '06 base model as his first truck. Loves it. But, need tire upgrades and getting confusing messages on size since it's a 5 lug. One suggesting a Faulken A/T 16in and another a Geolandar A/T 235/65/17. Both w the same new wheel as well. Concerned about safety obviously. Any suggestions?

Determine the trucks actual wheel size. You reference both a 16” and a 17”. The tire you purchase depends largely on the truck use.

If it's a real base model with the stock steelies then they are 15" wheels.

Is there any intention on lowering or lifting the truck? If not, then just go off the tire size that's in the door jam to get the factory sizes.

If it has after market wheels\tires on it currently, can you provide a picture of the one of the wheels\tires? That would help clear up some confusion.

Too many to fit here now!
The only 5 lugs that came from the factory with 16 or 17 inch rims (can't remember which) was the x runner with the v6. The 4 cylinder 5 lugs came with 15 inch rims and the stock size was 215/70/r15. If you open the driver side door, it may still have the sticker that showed what it came with from the factory. May be easier to see if you can still make out the size on the tire sidewall though....

I think Ford Fusion wheels fit. Get to a wrecking yard and pick up some 17” aluminum wheels and tires! Edit: and post pics, please.

Here's a pic of the truck. And sorry about the poor description on my part. It has the stock tires/wheels on currently. Looking to upgrade. Advice was no lift but definitely on the wheels and tires. That's where I'm stuck. Based on the rims my son has picked out, one shop recommends a 235/65/17xl Geolandar. Another suggests a 16in Faulken (No other dimensions provided unfortunately).

On the stock wheels a 235 75 15 will fit with no rubbing, bumping, trimming, etc.

Clean the wheels and paint them is a budget option.

Collect 'spare tire' wheels (for proper fit) clean and paint is an option (see pic below)

Buying new wheels means being VERY careful of the wheel specs in terms of backspacing/offset. The closer they match the OE wheel, the more confidence you have in their working right.

The tire calculator will help compare overall diameters of sizes. But the wheel fitment is just as important.

BTW, you might find info in the 5 lug forum that's helpful too.

PS, CeraKote headlight restorer will fix those lenses right up.

My taco is similar to your son's. I'm currently running Yokohama geolandar go15s in the stock 215/70/r15. Clearwater Bill gave a great suggestion if you want to save money. I've seen several with 235/75/15 tires on the stock rims and they looked pretty good.

If you're not gunna lift or lower it then get whatever size wheels you like and then use a tire calculator to get a tire equal in size to the stock tires for the new wheels. The size can vary slightly and that's ok. There is plenty of clearance for slight variations. Don't over think it, and don't let a tire salesman feed you some bologna.

As previously mentioned, not all wheels are going to fit your Tacoma. They are fairly finicky for wheel fitment due to the calipers so you have to have the right backspace/offset.
Your best source of info is Discount Tire and their website...enter your vehicle info and it should give you the wheels and tires they stock that will fit.
If your Tacoma is 2WD, looks like it has 15's and is 215/70/15. If its 4x4 looks like it came with 16's 245/75/16.

My Dad has a 2000 Tacoma with 15s and recently got new tires, we were shocked how how few AT tires we had to pick from for 15s, I guess they are really going out of style. But there are still some good options...he went with the Cooper AT3 XLT 31/10.5/15...and they are great. Geolander and Falkens are good options too.

Spend your time doing some research on wheels/tires on here, you will find a ton of info.

    Good luck

Great input. Definitely a lot out there to confuse a newbie for sure. And yes @Primo 95, 2wd w the stock tires. I've been trying to find about new proper size rims to go w upgraded A/T tires as well and whether going to 16 or 17in rims is appropriate for this model. So, that w what size is the largest / most appropriate here has been very confusing. Your dad's truck looks awesome btw...and basically the look we're trying to replicate. Leary of the tire sales shops as well as the after market mod guys.

I on the discountire site after you enter your info toward the bottom, it does have some options for sizing up or down 1-2 sizes that may require some fender trimming. I think it also had options for for going up to 16. 2WD is what is keeping your tire options small. 4x4 gives you a lot more wheel well room and tire options.

The search function on here can be a little overwhelming...try searching this on google and it might be a little easier to digest
