So in another thread people were discussing power loss when going to 33's. In an effort to lower the effects of larger tires I decided to start looking for the lightest 33. Here's what I've found so far. (If there is a thread that this info could be merged with for ease of access, please do so and I'll remove this one.)

I'm not sure what the tradeoffs are when using a P rated tire, it was just suggested in another thread.

Cooper Discoverer St Maxx E load - 255/85r16 - ("skinny" 33in tire) weighs in at 53lbs per tire.

Almost 10 lbs less per tire than the wider 33" option.

Primary reason I went with a skinny 33" tire was the weight savings compared to the normal width option (285s).

Previously I had 32 inch 265/75r16 KO2s on (E rated) and they were ~56lbs each...so I actually decreased overall tire weight by going up to 33s by going with the skinny tires at 53lbs each. Only about 2 lbs less per tire, but still...much better than adding on another 50lbs or so to the wheels overall if I had gone with 285s.

Just something to consider for those that want to go up to 33s but don't want to add a ton more weight to the wheels....consider a skinny tire. Only downside is that your options become pretty limited but there are some good tires out there in 255/85r16....ST/Maxx, KM2s, Discoverers, to name a few...plus some off-brands that you can find on eBay and similar places.

When I ordered them through America's Tire the guy on the phone kept asking me if I was sure about the size, telling me that people "only put these tires on trailers", lol.

Yeah I thought about it, but I'm really unsure whether or not they would handle the same, get the same traction, and crawl over rocks the same as a wider tire. My Goodyear Duratrac 265/70r17's do pretty well, but they spin uphill from a stop on dry pavement (though this may be attributed to wear) which is no bueno for pulling out into traffic. Plus I want to get a little more clearance under the rear diff since I've drug it across rocks twice now. Really I'll end up going 35's probably if I continue my downward spiral into Offroading, but that will come with re-gearing etc and hopefully I'll have a much more stable savings flow then that I can afford to splurge a little now and then. I daily my taco to work, and with the purchase of a house in spring, my commute will be about 3 times longer. I don't want to sacrifice too much so I embarked on this mission to find lightweight tires. I may even go 265/75r17s instead. who knows.

I was worried about the same thing at first, but I do a lot of 4x4'ing (mostly crawling, rocks, 4lo type stuff) and these have performed just as well if not better than my 32" KO2s did previously. Then again, they are about as wide as the KO2s were just taller. 255/85r16 is nearly the same width as 265/75r16

While this is asking for 33s, another possible option to consider is true 32s.

    265/70R17 is a 31.5” tire.
    255/75R17 is a ‘true’ 32” tire.

I recently swapped to 255/75/R17 KO2s in C-load that weigh 47lbs, just a little over a pound more than the 265s. 10mm narrower is only 5mm a side and almost unnoticeable, less rubbing issues and no CMC. They are about the same diameter as 275s, but less weight.

I am finding that the ST MAXX is 58 lbs. That is Load E, and I can't fine a D or C option. Source is Tire rack

I run 255/80R17 Toyo AT II, lightest 33 I could find and still be E rated. Very happy with them so far.

I went with 255/80R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W's. Absolutely love mine. Noticed speedo reads 2 less than actual.

This post implies that tire weight is the only or most important factor that determines the "power loss" of a tire. Have you considered the effect of rolling resistance?

Thanks man, I have been digging deep trying to find some 33's around 50 lbs. Having 16's does not help.
Kind of scared to get E Load as well because I have been told the ride quality turns to shit.

That is definitely something to consider. Is there an easy way to tell what the rolling resistance of a tire would be. I didn't read the whole article, but got the point.
