Bought my TRD OR on August 28th. It came with the same Goodyear Adventures that everyone else has on their OR. Took it in for its 5k service November 29th. The tires were already down to 7/32’s. I looked on TireRack to see what the original tread depth was for our tire and it says 11/32’s. At this rate my tires will only last for another 5k. I’ve driven about 1,000 on dirt forest roads. The rest has been primarily windy paved roads and highways and just saw it’s first interstate miles of any significance the weekend before Thanksgiving. I try not to go through corners very fast though admittedly I do it sometimes.
Has anyone else had their stock tires wear out this damned quickly? I feel like something is seriously wrong here.

Either my driving style needs to change or the 50k guarantee is bullshit. I don’t race it, don’t spin the tires except for a few 10 mph corners with serious curves going uphill where one rear is unloaded some, don’t usually brake hard and the local section of Highway 50 I live next to has been 45 in the windy bits because of clean up from a massive fire this summer.

Probably just need a better alignment.
I believe Toyota will do one alignment for free in the first year of ownership.

I have a micrometer and used that to certify depth. As far as pressure, they are always at the correct pressure before I go back on asphalt. I didn’t measure in three spots though like you mentioned though. I will go back and do that tomorrow in the light. I will also add photos though I don’t see what that will help with really.

It was 7/32 on all four corners so I’m pretty sure it’s not the alignment.

The 7/32 value...was this your measurement or what was on the dealer inspection form?

If it was the dealer inspection form it's not worth the paper it's printed on. They likely just put that down for every vehicle that comes in. I've had new tires shown as 4-5/32 and well worn tires shown as "green" on the forms.

As @whatstcp said, get a tread gauge and do your own measurements. I find it unlikely you've eaten that much tread.

EDIT, you posted before I hit reply.

The dealer form actually said 6/32 so that’s what made me go and check with my micrometer.

You have nothing to worry about. There is a difference between the tread depth on tires sold to manufacturers and the same model sold to consumers. Hence the reason most people need to replace factory tires in under 30k. I doubt you have anything to be concerned with.

Might be getting too old for this.
One thing I can say about the Wrangler AT w/ Kevlar, good or bad depending on how you look at it (I really want to put Nittos on), is they just won't die. I broke 40k on them and there is still over 10k left. The speed I take turns is not kind to them either.

The OE is the Canadian tire with 11/32". The aftermarket is U.S. made with 12/32". Both are available on Tire Rack.

That's actually my follow-up though, too. To meet fuel economy requirements and whatnot everything is getting lighter as well. I know the Michelins on my wife's Jeep were down to 5-6/32 in just about 30,000 miles which was quite low for a tire (and apparently decent for those specific Michelins) and when I talked to the tire shop while I was buying a new set of Discoverer AT3 4S he said that he rarely stocks Michelin OE tires these days because they wear out so fast as they're not putting the tread depth into them.

What is interesting is that Tire Rack lists a Toyota specific Goodyear and lists the OE at 11/32 compared to others in the same line, but I have to believe something is off here, either that 11/32 is off, or the measurement is wrong somehow.

    EDIT:

I went back to one of my old threads when I sold the OE tires in 2018. I would have had probably ~10,000 miles on them (I don't have my notes handy) since I put about 5,000 miles on my three season tires and 5,000 miles on my snow tires and I had 9/32 of tread. If you're actually measuring 7/32 that is surprising.

Thanks for the reply. I am also worried because I had planned on purchasing Goodyear DuraTrac’s and this lack of tread life has me questioning the whole lineup now.

From my experience , tire wear is not linear over time. It always seems like the first 2/32 burns off quickly, then wear starts slowing the further it goes.

Keep that warranty though. You might be entitled to a prorate if they do burn through that quickly.

I think it would be weird to get four bad tires. But stranger has happened.

No worries man. I have ran several sets of Dura-tracs over the years on Tacoma’s and you should expect to get 40k out of them. Be aware that they have a really thin sidewalk that punctures easy though. They are a soft compound and the hybrid tread pattern compromises wear.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear about tread wear and sidewall. I need something I can depend on as I am off road and out of cell service a fair bit. Thank you for your informative reply though.

One of the best wearing tires I have run on a Tacoma are the Nitto Terra Grapplers but overall I run Michelin defender LTX M/S on my wife’s vehicles and get 70k out of them and they are more capable than the all terrains I run to look cool.

How were yours for road noise? My best friend had an Xterra than ran 265/75-16 stock and I remember riding with him and thinking they were much, much louder than my then-KOs in E-Load. I'm not knocking them, I've never heard much bad about them, but I ended up with KO2s for the new truck because of the noise, amongst other things.

Have had great wear out of Toyo all Terrains also but you pay for it on the front side because they are not cheap.

Mine were not bad but I religiously get my stuff aligned and rotate at every oil change. Nitto hangs there hat on being the truest tire so that normally fairs well if they are balanced properly and maintained but tires are so crazy. For every person who swears by a tire you will find 5 people with horror stories. It’s like arguing oil brands. I can highly recommend the Michelin’s though. The defender LTX M/S is probably the best tire on the market for what 99% of people do. That said my trucks all have something else because I like an aggressive look but I have run them on some work trucks and they perform very good off-road. A lot better than you would expect looking at them. Worth looking into if you are not an vain as I am.
