Is one better than the other? I am leaning towards vertical but not sure if the weight of the stack is bad for the bottom tire.

Vertical: Takes up vertical space, but less horizontal space. The tire at the bottom of the stack is not easily accessible and is bearing the weight of the other 3 above it. You could store objects on top of the stack if needed. If stored on a dolly with wheels, is easy to move around when cleaning or organizing the garage.

Horizontal: Takes up horizontal space, but less vertical space. Each tire is easily accessible. Can be stored on the ground or on the wall as pictured, and could be stored near the ceiling to free up floor space (but would require a ladder to get to). Could be stored on something with wheels but I haven't seen too many examples of a horizonal rolling tire rack.

I've always stored mine horizontally. I think your initial impulse about weight is correct. They also collect less dust that way.

What's heavier? Three tires? Or 1/4 of your truck?

I get the orientation is different but I wouldn't lose a second of sleep with the tires stored either way.

Thank you for the first and only decent response.

Jegs actually makes a vertical stand that keeps them separated so they aren't bearing on each other, and surprisingly the price is not too far off from the crap Amazon has for sale.

best bet is to stand them upright if they're not mounted on a wheel so they don't sag under their own weight. If they're on a wheel you can do it either way as long as there's decent pressure in the tire.

My son-in-law has summer & winter tires for his Jetta...they are stored stacked on rollers.

When I was active duty Air Force Logistics, we stored aircraft tires vertically.

However you feel comfortable storing them is your prerogative.

    Stacked my mounted race rubber.

No issues on tires way softer than truck tires.
