Tire Size Suggestions for 17" Rim??

Being new, and new to the "truck" world, I might be asking a repeat question, but please be kind.

I would like to upgrade my wheels and tires - for my brand new 2021 Tacoma. What I would like is, if I go with 17" rims, what size tire is recommended for the truck? I know there are size variations, but I figured you all would know? I do plan on lifting, but not for awhile. Can't find Mr. Benjamin currently to fund the lift project .

265/70/17 is the largest tire without lift. It may have a slight rub depending on wheel offset/backspacing. 265/65/17 is the stock tire size that comes on the 17" wheels

Will that be condusive once I put a lift onto the truck? I want to make sure I don't get the wrong sizing. Lift the truck and find it looks bad.

I'm the type of person that quality is extremely important over doing a rush job, simply because I wanted to upgrade.

I figure this time, will allow me to research everything prior. And, I'd assume getting wheels and tires first would be my best move? I don't want to lift first; having the smaller rims and tires. Might look hooky?

I run 275/70r17 (32in) KO2's on 4runnner pro wheels (17in, either 0 offset or close to it with no poke). I chose them because like you, I didn't have a lift at the time but knew I was going to get one and didn't want to immediately upgrade. If they rubbed I don't remember it/it was minimal. They look decent with the lift and still no rubbing. Or just wait to get it all at once and enjoy it stock for a while :notsure:

I'm running 265/65R17 Toyo Open Country AT III's. They weigh about the same as the Open Country Highway Treads so my mileage is about the same and the speedometer is dead on. I have about 10,000 miles on them and, so far, they have been great in the rain, pull well in mud and fantastic on pavement.

Ha ha ha, here's my condundrum... If, at anytime I put money aside for something... Well...then something major occurs, then I have to use the money I set aside for, "x, y, & z."

Arrrrrrrr! Extremely frustrating. So, with that being said, I seem to fair better, if I do things in steps. Unfortunately, seems to be baby steps .

And, I have 2 other hobbies, that are expensive as-well. So, it's a juggling act

I went with 265/70/17 before I got a lift and they look good even after a lift.

    Welcome to Tacoma World:hattip:

The factory variant size is 265/65R17 found on the TRD Sport's. My understanding is the largest without a lift is 265/70R17. I do not have personal experience with this so take that info as you will.

    That looks great!

I don't plan on upgrading wheels/tires until I get 60K miles out of my current 265/65R17s.

    Ok....something to consider.

The stock size is 265/65-17. If you go to the 265/70-17, the tire is about 1 inch larger diameter.

    You are fretting over 1".........

Remember, a lift will not increase the size of the wheel well

I have a 2 inch lift on my tacoma and 265/75/16 (same diameter and width as 265/70/17) tires and it doesn't look weird at all. I have some negative offset which pushes the wheel out a bit.

With a 3+ inch lift you might want to upgrade to a 285/70/17, but that may require a cab mount chop.

My build thread is linked below if you want to take a look

265/70r17 with a 1.75" lift. For aesthetic reference.

I was gonna ask that question...since I have a Sport 17s. Just by looking at it, an inch should clear rear portion of wheel well but the front shroud may have to come off. Thoughts???

I just put on BFGoodrich KO2s 265/70/R17 on my 2020 TRD Sport (non-pro wheels) and I have had no rubbing at all. I do think they could potentially look small if a lift was added, but I personally don't plan on doing that. But as far as I know, if you went to 265/75/R17, you would start to get some rubbing.

Now, that's what I'm talking about!

I was looking at BF Goodrich too.

Another question...does it affect the speedometer readings? (Going from 65 to 70)

    Thanks for your feedback.

I did similar, I changed wheels but kept stock tires, only had 48k after 5 years on the tires and still had some life but 5 years was a long wait. I deserved an upgrade for the wait.

Got $500 for the stock wheels (only) at the time

31.5" diameter tire is about 99 inches around (circumference).
32.5" diameter tire is about 102 inches.
    (circumference = Diameter x Pi)
I rounded significantly and used 3.14 as pi. Sloppy math.

So for every tire rotation, you're roughly going 2 inches further on 265/70/17 vs the stock OR tire size. You can do the math, but something that small probably isn't going to change your overall speed readings on the speedometer. That's probably within normal tolerances...

edit: just to be clear, yes, you're moving further with one rotation, so it will be less accurate. Just not enough to really worry about it tooooo much.
